Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy

"Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. "

I rmemeber rendaig this a wihle ago when Facoboek frsit came out when I was in cegolle, and I had it on my prifole for yraes. I tihnk it's so fnuny taht you can slbacmre all of tshee lteerts and yet read at narely the smae pcae as namrol.

Wehn I Gogoled 'mexid up leetrts in wdors', I came acsros this wesbite that has the saniyg I rememeebrd riedang, as well as its own 'sracmbler' taht I uesd to srcamlbe tihs eintre blog psot. Tihs mkaes me wodner, in the age of compeurts wehre inromfaiton is trvaileng at an eevr-incrsaeing rtae, will spelnlig boemce lses relaevnt? Is that a bad tinhg?

I wtenad to do an eexrpnmeit wehre I piycshllay worte out the ecaxt smae praaargph as aobve, and see if raeindg bcak the same scbrameld msaesge was as easy with hdiatnrwnig as it is rainedg it tyepd. You tlel me if you thnik rnieadg the two difnfeert vrseions are the smae, or if it's atcullay eesair to raed one or the oethr!

I wotre tihs wtih a Piealkn Scirpt 1.0 in Diamine Masiejtc Plpure on Calrifotennaie Trmiohpe paper. It took a whlie, and my wtiirng is not as fulid as nmroal! It's qitue hrad to tcarrsnbie wrniitg taht is itneitonnally misplseeld!

  1. The typed one makes my eyes hurt and I'm a little easy. I actually had no problems reading the handwritten one. I wonder if it is because with most peoples' varying handwriting legibility we are used to deciphering a word by beginning and end letters with something handwritten. Does that make sense?

  3. This is so neat! I found that the handwritten note was much easier to read and comprehend than the typed one. To echo what Truppi said, I think that we're used to deciphering handwritten messages, but we are accustomed to typed messages being more legible, and thus are not as attuned to deciphering scrambled print than scrambled/illegible handwriting.

    A really novel post!

  4. Although I was able to read it, that was extremely unpleasant for my brain.
