H, I, J, K, L M N O…..C??

I doubt many of you noticed this mistake…I know I didn’t, and apparently neither did J. Herbin, Exaclair, or any of their retailers! The only one who noticed this mistake (and cared enough to question it) was a customer of mine who I’ll call Mr. P. He emailed me questioning the letter ‘P’ seal, noting how similar it looked to the letter ‘C’ seal. See for yourself:

The image above is the ‘stock’ image provided for all J. Herbin retailers to use on their websites, so you’ll likely see this image everywhere….with a ‘C’ for a ‘P’! I could see how you could mix it up….after all, look how bizarre that ‘Z’ looks! Look how similar the ‘I’ and ‘J’ look. The incredible ‘scriptiness’ (not a real word, I know) of these letters can be confusing. But looking at the letters with intention, I can definitely tell the letter ‘P’ is not a ‘P’ at all, but the letter ‘C’. The real seal does NOT look like a letter ‘C’. I took a picture of both for comparison, the letter ‘P’ is on the left, ‘C’ is on the right:

I’ve notified Exaclair of this issue and I’m sure this is something they’re going to want to fix right away. In the meantime though, know that if you order a letter ‘P’, the seal on the left will be what you can actually expect. If you ever see an error like this on GouletPens.com, my blog, or anything like this, please let me know. I will take action! Thanks to Mr. P for pointing out this error, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to make it right.

  • Maybe it was a mix-up when they were translating the French alphabet to the English one… lol.

  • So Mr. P gets a complete set of wax seals from Exaclair for free? That would be awesome of them.

  • It would be more helpful if, on the second picture, you rotated the brass seal in the correct orientation so we could see what they really look like.

  • sygyzy, it's not a matter of rotation, the seals are actually a mirror image on the bass. If you think about it, the seal will be upside down when you press it in the wax, so it will look backwards if you're looking straight at it. This was the best I could get it to look! Maybe I could mirror the image to show the actual seal, or better yet just do a wax seal with each letter!
