Noodler's Bernanke Black and Blue 'Fast Dry' Inks

Nathan at Noodler's has really outdone himself on this ink! It's a fast-dry formula, and it seems to be  REALLY fast! Nathan designed this ink specifically for higher-end papers like Rhodia and Clairefontaine (that he demonstrates in the video) that are made to repel ink, for them to dry fast enough (.5-1 second) for left-handed writers to use wet-writing pens.

New ways to show other fans your artwork

Rachel and I get some of the coolest letters from our customers and fans. We have calligraphers, watercolor artists, illustrators, cartoonists, sketch artists, poets, authors, and plenty of other enthusiasts with amazing talent that have sent us pieces of work they've done as a means of their gratitude. We're always so touched by this, and often times just amazed at what you all can do!

Write Time at 9: February 22, 2011- Brian Gray guest

Link to Ustream for the vid of us with Brian Gray.

Here's a recording of last night's Write Time at 9 if you weren't able to join us with Brian Gray. It was a pretty long and epic broadcast, 2 hours! But it went that long because we were diving deep into pen materials, nibs, and the business mindset of the Edison and Goulet companies. We dove deeper into our business philosophy than ever before, and I think it would be interesting for just about anyone to watch.

It's time for another episode of Write Time at 9! If you're just hanging out tonight at 9pm EST, you should just hang out with us and talk pen stuff.

Introducing: Edison Nouveau Premiere

If you've been keeping up with Write Time at 9 anytime in the last, oh, 2 months, then you're quite familiar with the collaboration between Rachel and I at the Goulet Pen Co. and Brian Gray of Edison Pen Co. But for those of you who know nothing about this, I'll give you some background info.

Noodler's Ink Fanpage Now on Facebook!

Okay so funny story....an enthusiastic fan of Noodler's had set up a Noodler's 'Group' on Facebook. The administrator of said Noodler's group apparently felt inspired to make Rachel as an administrator to the group, unbeknown to her! So randomly a few days ago she discovered she's apparently admin for the group....groups are okay but SOOOO Facebook 2005. Fanpages are where it's at today because they're much simpler to join, quit, manage, and network with others.

So Rachel inquired with Luxury Brands (the US distributor of Noodler's Ink) about spearheading a Noodler's Fanpage. The reason for it is to have one place where fans of the company and its products can get up to date information about the products, and share with each other about their experiences and feelings of Noodler's.

Here are some things you can do on the Noodler's Fanpage:
  • Add your own pictures
  • Post links to videos and other sites
  • Have discussions about Noodler's topics
  • Get updates on new and existing products
  • Share updates with other Facebookers
  • Find retailers who carry Noodler's products
  • Link up with other Noodler's fans
There's lots of fun stuff you can do there! In the interest of full disclosure here, I will say that Rachel and I are both administrators for the Noodler's Fanpage, but our intention is not to drive business to ourselves. It is more as a favor (since we're already quite active on Facebook and elsewhere online) to Luxury Brands and Noodler's that we are doing it. We will try to keep 'retailer talk' to an minimum, the focus will be purely on the products and the people who love them :) Our motivation is to spread goodwill about the brand so that Nathan is freed up to do what he does best, make ink (and pens, and artwork...and heaven knows what else in the future!).

So if you're on Facebook and you're a fan of Noodler's, then you should go be a fan of Noodler's on Facebook! Do it here.

Blindsided By Platinum Mix-Free Inks!

Picture Courtesy of Bruno Taut of Crónicas Estilográfic

We live in an online world today, that's for sure! I was chatting it up on Twitter the other day (@GouletPens) and I was asked about Platinum Mix-Free inks, and shown a link to Bruno Taut's blog Crónicas Estilográficas. I had never heard anything about them! I immediately inquired about what they were with the Platinum dealer here in the US. So here's what I know right now:
  • Platinum Mix-Free inks are (apparently) a new line of premium inks that are mixable with each other.
  • There are 9 different inks that you can mix together to create a whole palette of colors. There will be Smoke Black, Aqua Blue, Aurora Blue, Silky Purple, Cyclamen Pink, Flame Red, Earth Brown, Sunny Yellow, and Leaf Green.
  • They're 60ml bottles (same as the current Platinum Carbon and Pigmented inks) and are supposedly going to sell in Japan for around 1200 JPY. No official word yet what the sale price will be in the US, but it's estimated to be between $16-20 per bottle.
  • No official date for when they'll be available in the US, probably early June but don't hold me to that!
Picture courtesy of Bruno Taut of Crónicas Estilográfic
This is really about all we know for now. We're caught a little off-guard by this 'announcement' because there wasn't supposed to be any official word on them yet. What happened was that Platinum held a demonstration of the inks in the Itoya store in Ginza (Tokyo). Bruno was at this store when they happened to be displaying the Mix-Free inks in what appears to be some kind of test-market setup. Apparently, even Platinum retailers in the same city knew nothing about these inks. Bruno's blog seems to be the introduction of Mix-Free to the world!

Moral of the story? It's hard to keep something secret if you're going to display it in a public place. With today's cell-phone cameras and blogs, it doesn't take long for word to get around! Now we're all going to be waiting eagerly for these inks to arrive in the US. We will plan to carry the full line at GouletPens.com as soon as they're available, probably not until April. Platinum is probably surprised by the fact that people already know about this ink. But there are still logistics to put into place before this ink will be ready for worldwide distribution. Be patient! Look for more posts here as we find out more...

Pictures are courtesy of Bruno Taut. It is requested that you ask Bruno if you would like to repost these pictures.

Write Time at 9: February 15, 2011

Link to Ustream for the vid, this is a long one at 1.5 hours.

Tonight's broadcast was good, we covered a lot of info about the latest stuff we're all waiting for.....like Edison Nouveau Premieres!

The Premieres are scheduled to be ready to ship around the first week of March, still no definite date yet. We're going to work on teaser photos later this week and start taking pre-orders on Monday! They're coming along really nicely and we're all getting really excited about them.

We're still waiting on a bunch of Noodler's inks (like Black Swan!), but they'll be trickling in over the next week or so. Keep checking GouletPens.com regularly, and sign up for 'back in stock' emails to be notified when they are in for sure.

We also have 8x10 prints of Noodler's artwork, which we'll have available for sale. Nathan does all of the artwork for his Noodler's ink labels, and he offered us Dragon's Napalm, Black Swan in Australian Roses, and La Reine Mauve artwork to sell to anyone who's interested. He's only going to do 50 prints of each label, and they will be numbered. The 3 we have aren't signed by the artist, but we're looking into that for future prints. If you have any requests for prints of Noodler's artwork, email Rachel.

Platinum is apparently coming out with a new line of inks called 'Mix-Free', which are waterproof mixable inks (9 of them, I think). They're really not even supposed to be public info yet, but thanks to this one blogger, the cat's out of the bag and everyone's asking about it already! It should be coming to the US at some point in the next month or two, we'll keep you posted.

We're officially Sailor retailers now, waiting for our first order to arrive in. If you have any interest in Sailor pens, we're taking special orders for anything in the line. Email Rachel if you're interested.

The giveaway was an eyedropper brush pen from a bottle of 4.5 ounce Baystate Blue, a pretty cool little pen, really. Congrats Francis for winning by guessing the closest number of Ink Drop members that we currently have, which as of this broadcast was 222. We saw a huge jump in membership with February's colors, much to our surprise and delight! This has been a fun month's colors, and everyone seems to be enjoying them.

Lastly, we want to encourage everyone to 'like' Goulet Pens on Facebook, and follow me (Brian) on Twitter @GouletPens. We're working to be a lot more active on both of these, and we welcome you to join us in the conversations going on there. Write on!

Fanmail: An Inky Valentine

Inspired by February's Ink Drop, a fan and member of the club emailed me this drawing she did as a gift for her husband with all of this month's ink colors. I thought it was wonderful and asked to post it here to inspire you all! I love seeing the creative things our fans and customers do :)

She did this beautiful work with this month's Ink Drop colors: Private Reserve Arabian Rose, J. Herbin Rose Cyclamen, Noodler's Ottoman Rose, Private Reserve Rose Rage, and Noodler's Shah's Rose. If you are still interested in this month's Ink Drop, you have until 11:59pm EST to sign up.

If you have any creative work you've done with your Ink Drop or anything else you've gotten from GouletPens.com, do please drop us an email and we can share it with the writing community!

What is the future of J. Herbin Rouge Hematite (1670)?

Over on Quo Vadis blog, they posted asking about how everyone feels about 1670 being continued into production until 2012. This of course raises questions, as it was an ink commemorating the 340th anniversary of J. Herbin (hence the name, 1670).

But now it's been 341 years, so should the ink be discontinued? Or should the bottle be changed but the ink still offered?

If there's one thing I know about Quo Vadis blog and Exaclair (the US importer of Quo Vadis, J. Herbin, Rhodia, Clairefontaine...) it's that they really listen to feedback from their fans and customers. If you have an opinion about this ink, definitely jump over there and post how you feel about it on their blog.

Go post! They will listen.

Blogger Highlight: Drawing with a Squirrel

Do you remember that contest we ran here on Ink Nouveau in December? One of the winners was Gentian, the blogger behind Drawing with a Squirrel. The artwork on her blog is simply amazing, when you see her writing you'll be jealous, just like I am ;)

She won a bottle of Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses, and I was excited to see what she'd do with it. She was kind enough to do a little thank you drawing for us (unsolicited). I encourage you to see her awesome work over on her blog, this is just a taste of what she did with her Black Swan:

Write Time at 9: February 8, 2011

Join us live every Tuesday night at 9pm EST for Write Time at 9! We talk pens, paper, ink, and random other things (writing related usually).

Link to Ustream for the video.

We set a new record last night for the number of live viewers to our broadcast! We'll have to take a week off more often, haha! Seriously though, it was a fun broadcast with a lot of involvement in the chat (which always makes it more fun). We just got in prototypes of the collaborative pens with Brian Gray, and showed them live.

The name we've decided for the pens is:

Edison Nouveau Premiere

The meaning behind this name is multi-faceted. Edison is making the pens, and has been an integral part of the design. We've had a lot of the communication and input from pen fans on Ink Nouveau, so putting the two together seemed natural. It also has a dual meaning, because these are the first pens that Edison is doing in a 'production' format in this price range, they're the most affordable Edisons ever made!

We are calling it the Premiere (with an 'e'!) because it is an introduction to the pen world for a new type of pen. This is a pen that is made one-at-a-time with the care and attention of a custom Edison pen, but with a more attainable price. We're touting this as the 'pen for the people', a high-quality American-made pen that is an 'unlimited edition'. We wanted to call it the Premiere with an 'e' instead of the Premier (no 'e' on the end), because it changes the meaning of the word. Premier means 'premium' or 'limited'. Premiere is an announcement, an introduction to a movie, play, or musical, it's the celebration of a new production. It's no secret that if the Premiere is a successful and popular pen, there will be new Edison Nouveau pens added to the line, making the Premiere the first of a new line of 'pens for the people'!

We will be posting teaser photos soon of the Edison Nouveau Premieres. They're going to be available (barring any delays) around the first week of March.

We've been out of stock of many popular things....Baystate Blue, 1670, Black Swan, flex nib pens, and many other inks. We're starting to get in a lot of products now, so it will be getting better soon.

The February Ink Drop is out, and everyone's enjoying the colors. This has been a fun month, for sure! Rachel jokes that her choosing to do 'Rose' inks is because I haven't bought her roses in a long time :P It's not too late to sign up, you have until the 14th to get this month's colors ;)

We're also becoming Sailor retailers (it rhymes!), so if you're interested in any Sailor pens, let us know. We're going to carry all of their inks, but the pens are a bit overwhelming to dive into without knowing where the interest lies. If you have any interest, let us know.

Lastly, we're looking for ideas for ink sample packages. We'll have well over 300 colors to choose from, so it would be much nicer (and more fun) to have packages put together of maybe 5-10 ink samples, grouped together in helpful and interesting categories like 'ocean colors', 'nice shading inks', 'flourescent inks', etc. If you have any ideas, let us know!

Write Time Topics 2/8/11

We're back from last week's hiatus from Write Time at 9. If you're just hanging out tonight at 9pm EST, you should just hang out with us and talk pen stuff.

We've been playing a waiting game the last couple of weeks. We're waiting on Baystate Blue and Waterase (should be in today!), we're waiting on clips for the Brian G pens, we're waiting on Preppy o-rings, we're waiting on 1670, Noodler's Flex Nib pens, many other Noodler's inks, we're waiting on our first Sailor order to go through....

waiting waiting waiting.....

In the meantime, we've been busting our butts with every spare minute we have to update GouletPens.com with awesome pictures, and we're going to keep updating them for a while. So what in the world are we going to talk about at Write Time tonight?
  • Brian G pen updates
  • Timelines for out of stock products (there are a lot of them!)
  • Sailor pens and inks
  • Ideas for ink sample packages
  • February Ink Drop colors
  • Whatever other tangents you throw at us!
So if you have the time, stop by tonight at 9pm EST and say hi.

February Ink Drop Colors Revealed!

February's Ink Drop is 'My Inky Valentine'. Thank Rachel for this month's clever theme, as it was her idea to make this month's selection a bouquet of roses.

Here are February's colors:

Noodler's Shah's Rose
Private Reserve Arabian Rose
J. Herbin Rose Cyclamen
Private Reserve Rose Rage
Noodler's Ottoman Rose

A lot of people have been really excited about this month's Ink Drop. I personally have really enjoyed it because it's what Ink Drop is all about....showcasing really good, underrated inks. Many of these inks are ones that you either wouldn't think to buy or wouldn't want to buy just on speculation, so they're perfect for sampling.

Whether you're interested in getting a whole bottle of these or not, they're definitely fun inks to try out. I hope you'll be able to write some steamy love letters to your valentine with them ;) If you are interested in joining Ink Drop, you still have through February 14th to get in on this month's colors.

There are several great threads going on about this month's drop on the Fountain Pen Network, I invite you to see what people are saying and add to the conversation either on FPN or here in the comments:

What do you think of February's colors?

CBS Video: 'A Farewell to Handwriting'

I'm typically not one for mainstream news, but I found this video to be pretty interesting. Contrary to the title, it's not all down and bashing handwriting in the modern age, but rather it is pretty upbeat on the purpose of handwriting today. It has some interesting historical facts about handwriting too, stuff about Spencerian and Palmer methods of writing. Very interesting.....enjoy!

Noodler's Pens and Swapping Nibs

I've been asked before about what nibs are able to be swapped in the Noodler's pens. Nathan Tardif shows in his video how to change out the nibs of a Noodler's Piston Fill pen. He gives a demo of this while making you drool over a host of vintage Waterman, Sheaffer, and Conklin flex nibs. I'm sure for a lot of you this video may raise more questions than answers, but it's interesting to watch nonetheless.

Write Time at 9 Cancelled Tonight

Rachel and I have decided (kind of at the last minute) to cancel Write Time at 9 tonight. We are drowning in GPC work and need to get caught up. We have a few pertinent updates that we'll go ahead and cover here:
Platinum Music Pen
  • Noodler's Baystate Blue 4.5 ounce bottles with the free pens are on their way and will be in towards the end of this week. Sign up to be emailed when it's back in here.
  • Platinum Music Pens are in and ready to ship. I took some fun new pics of them, and I've been using one myself and really loving it
  • We'll be posting some teaser pictures very soon of the 'Brian G' collaborative pens, and we'll be announcing the date for when we'll start taking pre-orders soon. We're still searching for just the right 'official' name for the pens, so if you have any cool ideas, post here in the comments
  • We've applied to be Sailor ink and pen retailers, so if you have any suggestions for Sailor pens you'd like to see us carry (or special order), post in the comments here or shoot us an email
  • February's Ink Drop is out! We shipped out all of them today, which is part of why we need to catch up on everything else tonight ;)
  • We've reorganized the Noodler's categories on the GPC site, so it should be a little easier to find which inks are in which series, as well as descriptions for what the series includes

We're sorry for not being there live for you this week. We promise to put our 'time off' to really good use. In the meantime, enjoy these nice family pics from Joseph's first birthday :D
