Noodler's Ahab Flex Pens

Nathan's at it again, creating another ground-breaking pen. He's made changes based on the feedback and insane demand for the Noodler's Flex Nib Pens, and has developed one of the most interesting and ingeniously simple pens around today.

Noodler's Ahab Lapis Inferno and Clear Demonstrator Flex Pens

You may already be familiar with the Noodler's Flex Pens, which are considerably smaller than these new Ahab pens:

(top) Noodler's Nib Creaper Piston Flex Pen, (bottom) Noodler's Ahab Flex Pen

(top) Noodler's Ahab Flex nib, (bottom) Noodler's Nib Creaper Flex nib
The Ahab pen is a completely different nib, feed, body, and filling mechanism than the original flex pen. It is still technically a 'piston filler', but it uses a push-type plunger instead of a screw-type.

Noodler's Ahab Plunger
Another great thing about this pen is that it's easy to take apart for cleaning and adjustment. The whole thing breaks down easily, no tools required.

Noodler's Ahab completely disassembled

Now even though this pen is a plunger-fill, I was able to do a preliminary test filling it as an eyedropper by removing the whole plunger mechanism and filling the body (using silicone grease on the threads). I only did the test with water so far, but it held well and I was able to get close to 6ml of ink in this mammoth pen!

I know I didn't cover the adjustment or writing test with these pens here, I will cover that in a future video/blog. If you want to see the man who created the pens, check out Nathan's video here.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on these pens for prototype/demonstration purposes, but they aren't ready for distribution quite yet. I'm told to expect these to be available sometime around mid-October 2011, though that date could always (and most likely will) be pushed further back. One thing is for sure, they will not last long when they do arrive.

If you're interested in getting an email notice when we get them in stock, sign up for our email notification list by putting your email on the 'email me when back in-stock' list. Go here for Clear Demonstrator, here for Lapis Inferno. Because of overwhelming demand for these pens, we can't pre-order or guarantee anything. Once we get them in, we'll post a day or two ahead of time before we list them for sale at a specific time, and we'll email everyone on our email notification list as soon as we put them in stock.

Noodler's is ramping up production of these pens and the Nib Creaper Flex pens, and soon enough there will begin to be a steady flow of these pens streaming in. They will likely go quickly at first, but eventually, pen production will be able to meet the level of demand (unlike what we've seen in the last 10 months for the previous generation of flex pens).

So what do you think about the Ahab?

Diamine Denim, Eclipse, Macassar, Meadow, and Wild Strawberry

The 5 newest Diamine colors are in! I must say, I'm pretty impressed. Diamine has a slew of older colors that frankly just don't crank my tractor, but these new ones all seem to be headed in the right direction. I've been impressed with Diamine's latest additions to their ink line like Syrah, Red Dragon, and Oxblood, and these new inks continue that darker, more saturated ink trend.

I just got them in so I have yet to ink them up in my pens, but I am eager to do so. I thought a general overview would be helpful here to introduce you to the first round of the 20 new Diamine colors coming out in the next year. These are now regular colors that are going to be available, so I'm eager to hear what you all think once you start trying them for yourselves.

Ink Nouveau Now Available As Podcasts

It's been a long time coming, but I've finally jumped over the technical hurdles required to turn my Ink Nouveau videos into Podcasts on iTunes! This means that now you can download all of my best video and audio files and take them with you wherever you want on your computer or portable device.

The video explains it all, essentially you can find Ink Nouveau as a podcast just through a simple search on the iTunes store or a web browser search for "Ink Nouveau Podcast". All my podcasts are free.

One thing Rachel and I are planning to do now is record our live Write Time broadcasts as audio files and put them in the podcast. A video would be much too cumbersome in a downloadable format (each week ends up being about an hour and a half), audio will be much more manageable. We'll still post the Write Time videos here on the blog.

I've also considered doing a 'fireside chat'-style audio podcast every couple of weeks. I tend to talk mostly about fountain pen products here at Ink Nouveau, and I would love to share a little more into the 'mind of Brian'. The idea behind it is that I have some unique life experiences and ideas about how a business should be run, and I would love to share some of these things. I haven't nailed down exactly what this type of thing would be about, I'm really just thinking out loud. Perhaps it would be best for a different podcast and not to get entangled with Ink Nouveau, I don't know. I'm pretty much typing out loud here, please share your feedback with me on this one.

All-in-all, I'm really just trying to get the word out there about the joy of fountain pens as much as I can, and podcasting is a great way to reach more people. If you have any ideas about how the podcast format can better be used in this way, or if you have any other methods of sharing beyond podcasting, I'm all ears!

Purple Premiere Poll Results

The tally is in, and the winner for the 4th color of the Edison Nouveau Premiere is......

Pearlized Purple!

We thought it would be interesting to share the results of the poll:

This breakdown actually came out very much like we thought it would, though honestly I thought Purple/Cream would be a more popular 'second choice' than it turned out to be. On the first day of the poll, Pearlized Purple had nearly 80% of the vote, and Purple/Gold worked it's way up to a respectable number. But alas, Pearlized Purple held strong at the #1 spot, and it is the clear winner.

In all honesty, none of the colors would be a bad choice, it's just that Pearlized Purple was particularly stunning, I think! If you are desperately in love with a 'non-winning' color, Brian Gray will be offering up the prototype pens in some fashion. I will leave him to decide that on his own.

Brian will begin be working on these pens soon, so they should be coming available in the next week or two. If you're interested in the new Premiere color, you can check it out here.

A special thanks to all of you who took the time to vote, we greatly appreciate it! We loved reading all of your special comments as well :) What do you all think? Are you happy about the winning color?

Write Time Canceled 9/14/11

We've had a heck of a week this week...between shutting down our website today for a FULL physical inventory and our little boy getting all 4 of his molars coming in at the same time and keeping us up most of the week, we're pretty exhausted. Since we're still just waiting on a whole bunch of new stuff to come in, there's not much we have to talk about right now anyway. We're going to use tonight to relax and recharge. Here's a timeline for all of the new stuff we know you're waiting on:
  • TWSBI 540's: should be here in the next few weeks
  • TWSBI ROC-100: end of September
  • TWSBI VAC-700 and Bottle: still undetermined timeframe, at least two months away
  • Lamy Ruby Al-Star: the end of next week!
  • Edision Nouveau Premiere Purple: next week! Check out the poll to vote on your favorite color through tomorrow.
  • Kaweco new colors: end of September
  • Noodler's Ahab Flex Pens: end of September/early October
  • Noodler's Nib Creaper Flex Pens: end of September/early October
We also have finally set up our Ink Nouveau Podcast! It took me a good 40 hours or so, but I got all of the videos converted into a smaller downloadable format and uploaded to our new podcast. You can now download all of our best past video reviews, and we will be uploading future Write Time broadcasts (audio only) as well. It's just another way we're trying to spread the word about fountain pens!

Sorry we're not here for you this week, if you have any specific questions just post them in the comments here. Thanks everyone!

Making a Platinum Converter Silver Color

Platinum converters are gold (not real gold, just gold colored). That's never really bothered me at all, except when I went to check out the new Platinum Motosu 3776 pen, because it's clear with rhodium trim.

Platinum 3776 Motosu

One of the first things that went through my head was "I wonder if that's just a gold plating on that converter, and if there's a silver color underneath". Sure enough, there is. All it takes is a little sanding with an 800-1,000 grit sandpaper (or micromesh, as I have), and you can polish the gold right off in about 5 minutes. Then you have a nice matching pen!

Fitting the Converter on a Pelikano (and Jr.)

I've gotten a few emails about the standard international converter not fitting on a Pelikan Pelikano Jr.,  Pelikano, and Script. I wanted to make this video to show that yes, they do fit. The back end of the pen holds the converter in place and will give you some resistance when you go to screw together the pen, but with a solid twist you can seat it all the way on there. That's just how these pens were designed, and they're all like this.

Pelikan Pelikano, comes with a SI Long cartridge, fits a SI converter.
