One Million Views (and counting)

Back when I first started doing videos in January of 2010, I had no idea how long I would do them or if anyone would even care to watch them. I had no video making experience, and I really didn’t have a plan for how I was going to do them or in what frequency. I just knew I needed to make them, and I credit Gary Vaynerchuck and his book Crush It! for giving me the ideas and inspiration to make it happen.

I started my first video back on January 15th, 2010, just 10 days before my son was born. The Goulet Pen Company at that time was little more than a dream, we’d only been selling fountain pen ink and paper (no pens!) for a couple of months. It was just by wife and me, and she was working a full-time job. When her maternity leave ran out, she couldn’t bear the thought of going back to work and leaving our son, so we had to make the decision to try to make our little fountain pen supply business something we could live on, without any guarantees whatsoever. We had a little money saved up, but not much, and with a newborn and a mortgage we had anything but financial security. It was truly a leap of faith for us to decide to dedicate everything we had to making GPC a viable business, and producing videos and blog content on Ink Nouveau was an integral part in doing that.

After years of hard work, big risks, and many sleepless nights, we now have what many would consider to be a dream job. I can’t deny that we are incredibly blessed to be doing what we love and working with our two kids every day. Even though we no longer work out of our house, we commute with our kids to our shop each day, and we balance out managing our staff of 14 with the needs of our kids, changing diapers and reading books on Thomas the Tank Engine and Dr. Seuss. We work very long hours, and we’ve given up essentially everything besides faith, family, and work to be able to make it happen, but it has been well worth it. We are incredibly thankful for the love and support we have in the fountain pen community, and we will continue to educate and entertain with future videos for as long as we’re able, because we’re so thankful for your allowing us to do what we love every day.

Thank you for supporting us on Ink Nouveau, on YouTube, our podcast, and of course, For more than three years since we started our company, we’ve grown from an unknown mom-and-pop store to a company that’s able to do some pretty neat things, and we want to continue to be able to do more. We still don’t do any paid advertising, we rely solely on your word-of-mouth to spread the word about us. Hitting 1 million views on YouTube is both exciting and humbling. I feel very appreciated and valued with every video that I post, like I’m really helping you to enhance your own fountain pen experience. Thank you so much for all of your love and support, and here’s to the next 1 million views!

Brian Goulet

  • Dear Brian,

Last week which I celebrated the first anniversary of my blog, I read you post tears in my eyes. Even though having a small blog, I think dealing with fountain pens is a time-consuming hobby, I cannot image how hard it is to run a business with two toddlers and expanding it while keeping your blog awesomely active.

Thanks for being a reliable source for both shopping and consulting for every each fountain pen related matter.

Congratulations Brian. Despite all the pressures working against small businesses in the U.S. these days, you are a shining example of how passion and perseverance will prevail. More than a dozen jobs created – and none of them on the backs of hard-working taxpayers. My hat is off to you.

  • Congrats! I know it's a lot of hard work and you deserve every bit of success you have, and then some! Thanks for doing what you do. I'm proud to be your customer. 🙂

  • You have met a real need in the fountain pen community, and I am so pleased that your business has been such a success. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you didn't build it. Congratulations!

  • Jess from TartanHearts

Congratulations both to your family and to Goulet Pens as a whole. You guys make it really easy to want to support you and to be loyal customers! Thank you for your continuing great service, fast shipping, and wonderfully informative videos.

  • Congratulations! I just recently found y'all through Reddit.

  • Thank you so much! Yeah, I kind of have a lot on my plate…but I really love what I do and that is what motivates me to keep it up. I really didn't have a goal when starting out to do anything more than take it one blog post at a time…I'm certainly not the most planned or organized blogger, but I have been able to keep it up far longer than most. I don't have any plans to stop anytime soon either, this is just the *first* million views I plan to hit 😉

  • Thanks so much! Yeah, it's been a wild ride over the last 3 years 😉

  • Thanks Kate!

  • Haha, thank you! We might be a ways away from that, but it's always good to have goals, right?

  • Thank you so much, Stan! I'm surrounded by awesome people, there's no doubt that I owe a lot to everyone around me.

  • I appreciate the compliments, David. As a small business I often feel like I'm getting attacked from all angles, but I try not to worry too much about things outside of my control. I just make the most of every day, and try to positively affect things that are within my sphere of influence. I largely ignore the world as it is told to me by major media outlets, and I spend my time completely immersed in the fountain pen world 🙂 My main focus right now is to focus a lot on improving my own leadership and managerial skills, so that I can build upon the success we've seen as a company. It's one thing to work really hard and do something yourself, it's a whole new challenge to get others on board and motivate them to do work as well as you. I'm motivated to take GPC to a whole new level by not just serving my customers well, but also by building a company culture that is seldom seen in business today.

  • Wow, thank you so much John and Bama! That is very flattering, and very reassuring. We've been doing the handwritten notes ever since our first order that we shipped, 3.5 years ago. It's something that we easily could have stopped doing a while back, and no doubt if we were running this business like a typical corporate operation the notes would have been viewed as too time consuming a long time ago. But, it's an essential part of who we are, and speaks to the character and values we have as a company. Plus, I mean come on, we sell writing stuff so it's almost hypocritical to say we're too busy to write, isn't it? 😉 In all honesty, Rachel and I are both such "do-ers" that we did have some trouble in the beginning with wanting to always swoop in and do things ourselves instead of trust our team to help us out. But we've really taken ownership of our roles as leaders and teachers in our company, and we're getting a great deal of satisfaction taking on the new challenges as we grow.

  • Thanks so much Suzy! You've been with us for a while and seen as we've gone from a smaller mom-and-pop to a larger team, and your words of encouragement speak volumes to all of us here 🙂

  • Haha, thanks! We like to find underserved needs and fill them, that's kind of how my mind has always just naturally thought.

  • Thank you so much, we've really been able to recognize the most important parts of what we do and keep them healthy as we grow. It's not without its challenges, but we get a lot of satisfaction doing what we do!

  • Awesome! Reddit is an interesting place, we see some 'passionate' conversation going on there a lot 😉
