Brian and Rachel Goulet: Reflection After 4 Years

After just hitting our 4th anniversary of GouletPens.com, we're finding ourselves particularly reminiscent about our journey so far. We've taken our company from a mom and pop website, a laptop, and a couple of bookcases in our dining room, to a 12,000sf office/warehouse with a team of 18 people in 4 years. So much has changed about our company, yet at the same time, so much is exactly the same as what we originally set out for the Goulet vision. We sit down and share our thoughts and feelings with you in the most in-depth and personally reflective interview we've ever given.

We are so grateful to be able to serve you with our blog, videos, and store. Without you we wouldn't be doing what we do every day. We'd love to hear how our company has impacted you and your writing experience over the last 4 years! Please leave us some love in the comments, your stories are incredibly inspiring to us and give us the fuel to keep learning and growing.

Write On,
Brian Goulet

  2. well... I guess i never commented here before. But there is always a first time, right? In 2010 I came to US for a 4 months trip with my family to look for a dream. While we were in Lexington I passed by a pen store (I was always a pen addicted) and bought my very first fountain pen: a Lamy Safari. I fell in love with it. And decided to some research about it and I ended up in your website. I was interested in the Noodler's inks and wanted to buy some so I could take with me to Brazil. But my problem was that would stay just some days in each city and I was concerned that the package would not arrive in time. And then I e-mail Brian asking for how long he would think it would take. It was late at night and I was not expecting to have any kind of reply before at least 24 hours. And what a nice surprise when I realized that I had an answer just in 5 minutes! And I e-mailed again with another question and, again, a reply in 10 minutes. I thought it was amazing. And what a nice surprise when I opened the package and there was a handwriting note there. Then I started to watch all the videos, learned a lot with the tutorials, fixed by kaweko nib, etc, etc... You guys have an amazing company! I really admire the personal touch that you put in everything. And I tell you, that sometimes I am able to find something in a better price in some place else, but the personal touch that I know I will find on you caught me.

So, my advice would be: never, never, loose the personal side of your company! Never stop the handwriting note. Because this is a plus. A plus tha everybody looks for on these days that everything is about profits. I just regreted that I haven't kept that first invoice signed by Brian... Maybe it would worth a lot of money in the future. :)

    Good luck for you!!!!

The old adage "Behind every great man is a greater woman" is true. Goulet Pen Company is a wonderful business and Brian is a great face man for it, but it is the couple as a team that makes it the success it is. I am glad people get to see the brilliance in the woman that supports him in this video. Cheers, Rachel!

  8. Brian & Rachel, Before I discovered GPC, I was someone who had two fountain pens (a fine point and a medium point) and probably two colors of ink. But that world exploded when I found your site. The videos, the nib nook, all the ink comparisons, and the email interaction provide an experience that doesn't exist anywhere else. The videos are so engaging; you are both extraordinary in front of a camera, remember that! You really do provide the best of the internet's accessibility along with a familiar trusted, personal presence. All best wishes for the future!

  10. Congratulations on everything, I know you've grown so much but I pray that you'll always catch (and hold on to) the vision and drive to see where God will be leading you in the next 1, 3, 5 years :) It might look so grand now but it's nothing compared to what's coming.

Looking forward to my Macassar LE!!

  11. Honestly that was the best video yet! Well done you two. Great to hear how it started. Even clearer, your relationships strength shows. More power to your elbows.

  12. I'm impressed at the way you've grown your business and added employees, and apparently *happy* ones. Making pens might have been Brian's passion, but judging from the results, I think retailing must have been his calling.

  13. Thoroughly enjoyed this video! I am impressed with your ability to grow your company the way you have in 4 short years. The way you care about your customers is evident in everything you do, from listening to their needs to the care you take in packaging and sending orders to dropping a Tootsie Pop in their packages. I think your customers care just as much about you without ever having met you! What a great American success story. I found GPC, like many others, by surfing the web for fp information. So glad I found you!

  14. Hey Brian with uni exams coming up and note making for them being important I was wondering if you could recommend a high lighter safe ink I could use to write my notes in so that the ink note wouldn't be smudge. My favourite ink is J.herbin Bleu Nuit however it smudges with a high-lighter

    Thanks Doug

  15. You'll probably have lousy luck with the J. Herbin inks Doug - they're beautiful but they're all very water soluble.

Most "waterproof" inks should survive highlighting (with one major caveat: ink that doesn't sink in to the paper and REALLY bond with the fibers will lift and smudge bit when the wet highlighter hits it).

Based on personal experience Noodlers Black (diluted 50% with water) doesn't smudge much after about a day to dry. If you like blues Noodler's Upper Ganges Blue seems to hold up well to water/highlighters/other abuse too.

  16. I just want to say how greatly I admired all you've achieved in such a relatively short time. Goulet Pens is my favourite pen store, maybe my favourite online store overall and it's the first place I recommend to new fountain pen users. You guys and your entire team are always so helpful and you've proved yourself a trustworthy place to shop. Here's to another for years!

  17. This is just such a great example of the old adage "if you offer a good product, great service and reasonable prices the world will beat a path to your doorstep!" Thank you guys!

  20. I am surprized. Only 4? It must be that long ago I first bought black Noodler's ink with a free pen in it. I lost the pen, but I got several others, mainly flex types. Good luck.

  21. This was great. You guys are just so easy to support. My best retail experiences are ones where I'm happy to have made my purchase. I hope you continue to have great success, in business and in life!
