Accomplish Your Goals with BLISS

I've recently accomplished a major personal goal of mine in the last six months, to lose more than 45 pounds. I set this goal privately on June 15th, 2013, and achieved it on December 16th, 2013. Many of you have noticed my transformation in my videos, and I've been getting a lot of questions about how I went about doing this. The timing worked out really nicely where I achieved my goal just two weeks before the start of the New Year. I've been taking the last couple of weeks to reflect on my experience and clarify the principles that helped me to actually accomplish this. I put this together into a video to help to motivate and inspire you for any goal you may have set for yourself, especially in this time of New Year's resolutions.

I have put my goal-oriented principles into what I call BLISS:
  • Benefits- things that motivate you when your end goal doesn't
  • Lifestyle- setting your life on a new trajectory
  • Incentives- rewarding yourself for achievements that work towards your end goal
  • Support- people, education, and tools to motivate and inspire you
  • Sacrifice- achieving any significant goal requires compromise and dedication

I explain each of these and how they helped me to accomplish my goal, as well as give you some inspiring words to show that you can accomplish what you set out to do as long as you are realistic with yourself about what it will take to achieve it.

My wife and I work together in our own company with 18 people on our team, and we have two kids (a two-year old and 3-year old), and we do not have the luxury of free time. I know you probably feel as overwhelmed as I do sometimes. The whole reason I want to share my experience with you is to inspire you to do the hard work you need to do, because now being on the other side, it is worthwhile!

Let me know what you think, I'd love to hear some of your goals for 2014 and offer you some words of encouragement in the comments below.

Write On,
Brian Goulet

  2. Thanks! After all the weight loss, I figured I'd give the 10-year buzz cut a different look ;)

  3. Congrats, Brian. Bliss indeed. My goals this year are all internal soulwork. I am currently working my way through Caroline Myss's book, Entering the Castle, based on the writings of St. Teresa de Avila. I am not Catholic, but these writings (and those of Francis of Assisi and John of the Cross) are fabulous.

  4. Definitely, I'm right there with you. I've been working really hard to get my mind and body in shape, now it's time for me to really focus on my spirit. I actually am Catholic, so I think I'll check out Entering the Castle for myself. I've been reading Michael Kelley's Rediscover Catholicism, as well as listening to some really good podcasts.

  5. Brian, this is so lovely. I think you have hit on the key issues with achieving any big new goal in a low-key, well duh sort of way that is inspiring me, for one. And I really like the BLISS acronym. I have some physical (weight loss/fitness) goals and some kinda spiritual work goals, and have already begun seeing a bit of progress. Watching this video is a real boost to me. Thank you so much for sharing. (Love the hair) ;)

Speaking of books, you might be interested in Heroic Leadership: Best Practices from a 450-Year-Old Company That Changed the World, by Chris Lowney. It is about the Jesuit order's leadership formula, which I think is right in synch with what I have seen of your leadership and business style. Also Ben & Jerry's Double Dip: Lead with Your Values and Make Money, Too. My husband and I heard Ben & Jerry speak to a group of local business leaders probably 20 or 25 years ago, and their words changed the way we ran our business from that day to this. It's a bit older now, and things have changed within their company, but as with the Heroic Leadership book, I believe the basic principles they talk about are right in line with yours.

Very best wishes for the new year, and a big shout out to Rachel!

  6. Pure poetry Brian!
A hearty congratulations to you. You have accomplished something, with grace and quiet certitude, that many people consider, and many people talk a lot about, but only a few manage to achieve!

My personal goal for the new year is to make haste slowly. For me that means letting go of "over-committing", it means saying 'no thank you' and most of all it means to learn to listen and to see more deeply. Time moves far too fast for my taste and so I am planing to try to slow it all down as much as I am able to!

  7. Wow! Congratulations Brian. What an achievement. I love your acronym and am going to shamelessly "borrow" it to help me with my weightless goals.

Too often I forget that about the L and S parts - it is a permanent lifestyle change that has to work for me long term and I am going to have to sacrifice to achieve the bliss.

    Thank you and congratulations!

  8. Hey Brian, Although I could comment on this video - great job and I love your BLISS acronym, this is actually just a generic comment about you and your family and your business. I just wanted to say thanks for all you do. It's evident in your business and the priorities that you display, that your family is extremely important to you. I think you extend that family out at least two generations. First, your family consisting of Rachel and the children, your parents, in-laws, etc. Second, your family of employees, and third, your family of customers (and I'd say even those who aren't customers, but get great information from you on your website). It's evident that you believe your employees and your customers are important in the way you treat us. Brian, thanks for all you've done, and all that you continue to do. Thanks for being a positive role model as a husband, a dad, a boss, and a vendor. It's no wonder Goulet Pens is a success! BTW, I'm currently waiting on my new TWSBI Vac 700 with the lolipop in the package. I'm a very satisfied customer!

  9. Brian - Huge congratulations...you look great! And it feels like you are extra-energetic...maybe a combo of physical energy plus general happiness? This video is so inspiring. I've just started on my own 40# weight-loss goal, so I will be coming back to this video for frequent shots of inspiration and motivation. Many thanks!

  10. I didn't think I would enjoy this video. But I really appreciated it. I think we all have some things that we know we need to work on, but find it difficult to do so.

When your business is able to run on autopilot, I can see a career in self-help books/lectures in your future. :) It was that great!
