Intro to the TWSBI Classic Fountain Pen

The TWSBI Classic is an opaque-resin piston-fill fountain pen that was released in January of 2014. Known for the 580, Mini, and Vac-700 pens, TWSBI has generated a lot of questions around this new model. I made this video for you to give you the run-down of what this pen is all about and what distinguishes it in the TWSBI line.

Notable features include a piston-filling mechanism with an ink capacity around 1.2ml. It's available in a #4 size stainless steel nib available in extra-fine, fine, medium, broad, and 1.1mm stub. It's thinner than the Mini and 580, and weighs about half-way between the two pens (24g). It's a pretty good value at $50, especially considering non-TWSBI pens of the same build typically cost over $100. It's available in black, red, and blue.

Two downsides to the pen are that the cap doesn't post (not the end of the world, but important to know), and there are no separate nib units available for the model at this time. The nibs are really stuck in the pen, too, so even though I initially thought they were swappable with the Mini, I wouldn't recommend trying as you'll likely damage your feed or nib trying to remove it.

I have several more TWSBI Classic videos in the works that I'll be publishing soon, everything from how to fill it, how to completely disassemble and reassemble it, filling it from a Diamond-50 or 50P inkwell, and writing with it and comparing it to other pens. I'll be covering a lot, but surely not everything, so if you have any questions just leave me a comment below!

  1. Your Amethyst looks terrific. Nice and deep. I went in a Caribbean direction with Larimar, in honor of a gem my wife loves:

  2. These looks great. Almost pulled the trigger on the blue EF last night (it's out of stock now), but I'm considering the color 580's as well. One thing I like more about the non-color 580's is the ability to buy different nib units. Will this be available for the classic's and the upcoming color 580's?

I really like that the TWSBI pens come with the tool and lube to maintain your pen, and the ability to buy spare parts.

  4. One question, does the nib unit remove so you can use the TWISBI inkwell?

  5. Wow! I also designed an Amethyst (Rafael, Seville)

  6. Yes it does! I'll have a video out on that soon. It fits on the Diamond 50 and 50P.

  7. The blue EF is what I kept for myself, you might have had the chance to get yours otherwise ;) Yeah, I totally hear ya, I don't know yet if they'll do nib units for the Classics. it'd be awesome if they did, since they have them for all their other pens. It is pretty nice that they include the grease and wrench with their pens, they're the only company I know that does that.

  8. I did a pearl grey which I called Moonstone because I really love a grey ink (Iroshizuku Fuyu-syogun, Montblanc Oyster Grey, De Atramentis Frankincense, J. Herbin Gris Nuage), and they already have the best blue-black ever, Tanzanite.

  9. Hey, Brian, I was told direct from TWSBI that the nib is a #4, the same size as that in the Mini.

  10. I designed a red-orange, capturing the color of one of my favorite gemstones, carnelian. I'm an hobby jeweler with an intense love of gemstones, so this was a lot of fun for me!

  11. Looking forward to mine arriving. I tried to wait to watch the video until I had my Sapphire version in hand, but I failed at waiting.

  12. Oh, thanks for setting me straight on that, Dan! I'll change that right away.

  13. Haha, that's okay, you can always watch it again once you have your pen ;)

  14. Here is mine, which I named Fire Opal. An orange with tints of red and black for a dark but not too brown look.

  15. Very nice! That's similar to mine. I love purples that lean a little bit pink. Good luck!

  16. A grey would be a nice addition! Grey is definitely an under-rated ink color, especially one with good shading.

  17. Very nice! I like the brilliancy of the color. Very vibrant.

  18. I like that a lot! I'm a big fan of burnt orange.

  19. I designed a Rose Quartz. I basically wanted to create an ink in my favourite shade of pink, which happens to closely match my favourite pink gem.

  25. Very pretty! It's similar to the 2012 Tourmaline, but a bit brighter. Maybe less purple. I like it.

  26. Goulet blue!! It's beautiful ;)

  27. I think a brown would be a lovely addition to the line. I would adore a chocolate brown ink with fantastic shading.

  28. Ooh, what a pretty sky blue! It's hard to find a good light blue ink. Many lean very turquoise, or are just muted darker blues. I like a good vibrant ink.

  29. Gorgeous dark green!

  30. I am so digging this pen. It's much prettier than the rest of the TWSBIs. Not posting is not a problem for me and piston filler, wrench, grease and reusable case(!!!!) are definately a plus.
I am concerned a little about the cap logo. Is that bright red looking good in person? It may be ok with a black barrel, but what about blue? and green?!

If you have direct contact with Speedy, would you pass on him some questions? I know he is about to make a green classic. Would he consider a grey one too?
And would he also consider a remedy for the red logo problem? I see how matching the logo with the pen barrel will be difficult and perhaps not financially feasible, but how about a black/silver one?

    Thanks in advance

  31. I went with a blue myself. I called mine Lapis: it's a rich blue with hints of green and black. I figured i'd go with something I'd buy myself; bold, but better for general use than my current blue Kon-Peki.

  32. Just from outward appearances, I would have though the Mini held more ink than the Classic, but that's clearly not the case. Nice intro. I've been enjoying my Mini since I nabbed one very close to release day. Most definitely worth checking out if folks enjoy TWSBI nibs (and how could you not) and are looking for something with a lighter feel and classic looks.

  44. Great news. There is a cap that will allow it to post. It cost $4. I just contacted TWSBI and they gave me info on where to order it.
