Several weeks ago I discovered a blog post done by Sonia Simone of CopyBlogger.com about Surviving "Content Shock" and the Impending Content Marketing Collapse where she mentioned me as a 'rainmaker'. Rainmaker content, to borrow the term from Sonia, is "to serve a business purpose in attracting a larger prospect base, bringing in leads, nurturing and educating those leads, and paving the way for a sale." That pretty much hits the nail on the head in defining my blogging strategy.
I basically just put out a lot of the best quality videos and blog posts around fountain pens and how to use them to help as many of you as I can, and in turn, you buy from me if you feel I'm worthy. It's worked well for me so far. A special shout out goes to Sonia for including me in her post, I didn't know she was going to do that and it was a very pleasant surprise because she has quite a following.
So the story continues....Trevor Young of Expermedia.com.au saw Sonia's blog, discovered me and my company there, and became intrigued. He dove in, did his own research (unbeknownst to me) and created probably the most thorough and comprehensive write up I've seen to date about my company by any independent writer. He called it Everything you need to know about social media and content marketing, you can learn from this Virginia-based fountain pen company, a name that he personally admits is too long for "SEO" reasons, but he doesn't care because is describes what's actually going on. He's my kind of guy ;)
I was so impressed and flattered by Trevor's write up that I left him a heartfelt and thorough comment on his post, thanking him and sharing some additional thoughts I had. And I left it at that, thinking it'd be great just to have the comment approved. But I was pleasantly surprised when Trevor reached out to me and thanked me personally for my comment, and then asked me if I would be willing to do a podcast with him where we'd do a little Q&A style interview going more in-depth with my personal strategy (if you can call it that) and philosophy behind social media and the role it plays with the Goulet Pen Company. I agreed, and thus, this podcast was born.
Trevor and I had a great conversation, and it really builds upon a couple of other interview-style things I've done in the past. Just over two years ago I did an interview with FPGeeks for their first-ever Geek of the Week here, and I proved there that I will really talk forever if no one will shut me up. Just a couple of months ago Rachel (my wife) and I did a great video here reflecting back after hitting our company's 4-year anniversary. It's a really interesting insight into what it was like in the early days of our company. Trevor's podcast kind of builds upon all this, talking a lot more about the 'why' of what we do than necessarily the 'how' or the 'what', it's a worthy 45-minute listen if you have the time or the interest.
