The Goulet Family: Bigger and Smaller

Goulet Family, March 2014

Goulet Family, November 2012

Those of you who know how we do things over at GouletPens.com know that we’re a family business. We started out with just Rachel and myself, expanding our family with our son Joseph and daughter Ellie over the last 4.5 years! We’ve grown our Goulet Team quite a bit over the last 3 years, taking our company from just a mom and pop to soon-to-be 23 people on our team.

It’s been exciting growing so much, but we’ve always felt it’s really important to keep our company personal. That takes a little more intention to do now than it did in the early days! One of the ways we do that is to put up biographies and pictures of all our staff on our About Us page. It gives you a sense of what we’re all about as a company, as well as what we are like as individuals.

The reason for this blog post though is to let you know we’ve updated our Goulet Family picture on the About Us page. It’s been a year and a half since we’ve done so, which may not seem like a long time. A lot has happened in that time, for us! Our kids (then 11 months and 2 years old) are now 2 and 4 respectively, and they are just bundles of energy that keep us all chasing them around the Goulet shop every day!

Those of you who’ve been following me and watching my videos anytime in the last 9 months know that Rachel and I have been changing our health lifestyle pretty drastically. Mainly it’s been diet changes, with a more active lifestyle. Rachel has amazingly lost 25 pounds, which is incredible to do after having two kids (great job, honey!!). And I have lost 65 pounds because I cut out a lot of bad food and I ride my bike like a maniac every day.

You can really see the huge difference we’ve made in our lifestyle in our new family picture, which Rachel’s sister was kind enough to shoot for us this past weekend when we visited her family. I don’t write any of this to brag (okay, maybe just a little because we’ve been working really hard!). Really, I just want to inspire those of you who need a little motivation to perhaps eat a little better and be a little more active. Time marches on, life gets crazy, and being self-employed young parents we totally understand how crazy things can get sometimes. We let ourselves go for a good 10 years or so before we finally decided to do the hard work to turn things around. And now that we have, we can really see the difference it’s made.

How about you? I’d love to hear your inspiring stories or hear some of your goals that you’ve set for yourself so I can give you some encouragement, just leave a comment below.

Brian Goulet

  • Martha Segura

I'm siting after a good workout, cooling down as I read this. I, too, am in the process of improving my health and lifestyle. I'm extremely happy for you, your growing staff, and family. It all starts from a desire to change, grow, and improve and I see that with you guys! I can certainly see the benefits on you and your lovely wife from all your hard work.
I'm new to fountain pens and on your site often. I am in love with the ones I've managed to get so far. Baby steps. My friend who got me hooked on them and I are planning on returning to the Chicago Pen show this May. Hopefully you will be there. Congratulations on your continued improvement and success and thanks for the motivation!- Martha

You guys look awesome! And it's very inspirational to hear about your hard work and I thank you for sharing your personal goals with us. My husband and I have been through something similar ourselves. We also been letting ourselves go the past 10 years and it takes courage to look at yourself and fess up and make that change. Since last year august we started to exercise and eat more responsibly/healthier. Now 7 months later I've lost 18kg (~40lbs) and my husband lost 15kg (33lbs). I'm still amazed how taking action and control can turn your life around like that! We feel better than ever before and definitely plan on keeping this up! Thanks again for your inspiring blogs about this! Write on πŸ™‚

Well, my girlfriend seems to enjoy watching your new videos much more than your old ones… hmph….

  • Chrissy P

Props to you all for the wonderful changes! I hope you are doing well and keep moving forward with even more success =) Joseph and Ellie are adorable!

  • Susan

Pass those woodworking skills to your daughter, too, if she is interested. It is something I wish I could do but when I was in school, girls were prohibited from enrolling in wood shop.

You two actually look much younger in the current photo than you do in the one taken more than a year ago. Only the kids are growing (and they, like you two, look fantastic). I wish you all continued health, happiness, and success.

More than forty years ago I was very uncomfortable with a bit of extra weight (about 10-12 pounds) and decided to try and lose it. I not only succeeded but have never been that heavy again. It can be done, as the Goulets are proving. πŸ˜‰

  • FraijoManda

You guys look amazing, and thanks for sharing with us! I lost 130+ pds with diet change and exercise as well. I have 3 kiddos of my own, and I'm so glad that I can be a positive role model for them as they grow. xoxo!

  • soniasimone

You guys look great! Beautiful family. πŸ™‚

  • Brenda Swenson

Wow…I'm impressed!!! The busier our lives get the less time people spend on their health. It good to see you both make a decision together to make good choices, NOW. You're good roll models to your children and employees. The difference is amazing!

  • Derik Ling Yii Zhan

Still not used to the new Brian πŸ™‚

  • Carol F Metzger

Wow you all look fantastic! Good job!

  • Beau Hardy

You look marvelous! The children are so big. It make me glad to see you grow and prosper. Your friend from day one, Beau.

  • Good for you! I've had the desire to change before, but not to this level. I've made efforts to exercise and whatnot, but never change my whole lifestyle (and that of the whole family, really). Something clicked last summer though, and Rachel and I have changed a lot for the better. Thank you for the encouraging words! Good luck to you in your journey as well, Martha!

  • Wow, that's awesome! It really helps to do it as a team, good for you two. I'm glad our story is motivational, I always debate about posting non-pen related stuff like this, but it's definitely an important part of what we've been doing (and our health affects how we're able to run our company!).

  • Haha! sorry John πŸ™‚ I'm sure it's just a coincidence!

  • Thank you! Yeah, the kids are just too much these days. They're soooo energetic and really becoming 'siblings' now, drama and all. It's a blast, they're so fun at this age (though tiring!).

  • I know, right? I keep telling Rachel, I feel like I've time-traveled because I am the same weight I was 10 years ago. I look and feel much younger than I did in the old photo!

  • Wowee!! Congratulations, that is incredible. Kids are a great motivator, they need a good role model. Right on!

  • Aw, thank you so much Sonia! Dirty little secret here, it took over 20 minutes of kid-wrangling to get a 20-second period of bliss where this photo was able to happen. With these types of family photos, you have to shoot with what I call a 'spray-and-pray' method! πŸ˜‰

  • You're right about that! Time is one of those funny things, we never seem to have enough of it. I finally just got sick of hearing my own excuses and decided that if I was going to get in shape I needed to MAKE time, so I started waking up earlier to make it happen. I arise daily now between 5-5:30am so I can get in a solid hour+ of cycling before my kids wake up. I have had to sacrifice practically all my free time to make this happen, but it's been worth it to feel like myself again. With the extra weight I was packing, I never really felt like I was seeing myself in the mirror.

  • Me too, a little bit! I catch glances of myself in the mirror every now and then and do kind of a double-take!

  • Thanks Carol!

  • Oh man, aren't they? My kids are growing up just too fast, it's amazing how the time just ticks along. Thanks for all your support, Beau πŸ˜‰

  • Whitney

    Seeing if this works. Testing.

While working as a nurse, I took pre-req classes for medical school and just finished them. I had a two year goal written in my journal and I'm on track preparing now for the biggest test of my life so far, the MCAT. I have written with one of my favorite ink colors my BLISS and I carry it around with me to remind me of the benefits of all my preparation. I could use all the encouragement and prayers I can get! By the way, you and Rachel look great! The kids are way cute!!

  • Serge Vdovychenko

You look amazing! And the kids are just adorable πŸ™‚

Could you please specify the changes you made to your personal diet? Thanks

  • Great turnaround and beautiful photo. I finally got that treadmill desk set up in my home office, Brian. The one we discussed in email a while back. So now I can walk while on the phone or using my computer. I've lost 14 pounds just doing that for two months – it's a good start. Now I have to begin to ratchet it up a bit with some other activities. Glad to see the before and after photos – I am encouraged that I can do this. Your friend, Walter

    Looking good!

Brian, how much riding did you do this winter? Are you still going out in the mornings? I remember those cold Blacksburg mornings. Now that's COLD! I had full intentions of going night mountain biking with the local club once or twice week over the winter, but it seemed to snow/rain/sleet for every scheduled ride. I hate winter riding anyway. Glad it's almost over (fingers crossed). The warmth can't get here fast enough.

  • Ignazio

Nice job Brian!! You and Rachel look great …. its an inspiration. I too am trying to make lifestyle changes … not an easy task. Would love to hear some of your advice. oh… by the way… I too am a blue ink fanatic! I still haven't found what I'm looking for. πŸ™‚

  • vanessa

I noticed the weight loss in the most recent video of yours I watched. You guys look great! My kiddo says he likes your new hairstyle better, Brian. πŸ™‚

  • Great to hear about your healthy changes! I made a similar change of eliminating sugar and most processed foods from my diet and have also lost weight and feel better.
