Sneak Peek: Waterman Ombres Et Lumières Collection

Paris is for pen lovers. Thanks to Waterman’s special edition fountain pen collection inspired by the very much en vogue Ombre style, you don’t need to get your passport stamped to write and sketch under the glow of The City of Light.

The vibrant black and white designs of the Ombres et Lumières Collection take inspiration from the mesmerizing lights of Paris by night. This collection proudly expresses sophisticated style and timeless Parisian chicness. A hypnotic and graphic pattern captures the timeless elegance of the black & white duo with high gloss lacquer and luminescent silk screen designs.

Here’s a quick overview of the collection:

The Waterman Ombres Et Lumières Collection is expected to arrive in the USA in early April 2015.

Pricing for the fountain pen version will be $130 for the Hemisphere, $185 for the Expert, $200 for the Perspective, and $385 for the gold-nib Carene. Our price would be 20% off the MSRP.

We’ve been contemplating carrying Waterman pens regularly on our site for a while now but just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. We’ve special ordered them from time-to-time as an authorized Waterman retailer, and we really like them. Brian regularly has a Carene in his daily carry collection.

What do you think – do you like Waterman’s take on the ombre style? Any other Waterman pens strike your fancy?

I have two older Laureats, which I love…I’d probably try the hemisphere or expert.

    • Madigan

Thanks for the feedback, Michelle! 🙂

My Carene has been a wonderful pen for over 10 years. Capped, it does not dry out after several weeks. Writes very well, perfectly wet. The F I have is close to the M Pilot nibs. Smooth, never had any problems. I use Waterman cartridges and refill them with my Goulet Ink Syringe; they hold a lot of ink. My Carene is in amber shimmer color, brass barrel and cap. It has held up quite well.

Tom, I think we have discussed the beauty and functionality of the Carene before. It is a unique pen, gorgeous lines, and one of the best writers. I’ve never had a problem with mine drying out or skipping. As close to a perfect pen as one can get, IMHO. All of that said, however, I’m not sure the ombre is as beautiful as the others. I’ll reserve judgment until I see the incredible Goulet photography. This looks like the Waterman ad photos. My Carene is dark blue with chrome trim. Your amber shimmer is one of the most beautiful Carenes of all time.

      • Madigan

Glad to know we have some Carene fans out there… it is definitely my favorite from the photos Waterman provided. If we do end up bringing them in, I’m sure Sarah’s photos will do them justice. 🙂

  • Oh these are gorgeous! Seems like a good time to get my first Waterman. The Expert looks right up my alley, price and style. They all look amazing though.

    • Madigan

Good to know, Kenny! We’ll take it into consideration. 🙂

Take my money, please. OK I feel bad I missed the boat on OMAS, so I’ll definitely get one of these bad boys.

    • Madigan

An enthusiastic yes then! 🙂 We’ll keep it in mind. Any particular one you prefer?

Those pens are stunning and I’m sure would sell well.

Have you considered carrying Diplomat pens? As I own a few and they are phenomenal especially the Excellence range. Better value and made to a higher standard then Lamy or Kaweco.

    • Anon

I agree about Diplomat pens. I have 2 modern and 2 1990’s Diplomats, and really enjoy all of them. A few years ago I found one of the older Diplomats buried in my closet, cleaned it out and got it working again, and that was my re-introduction to the world of fountain pens.

I’ve been wanting to try a Waterman fountain pen, but this particular design doesn’t appeal to me. However the prices you quote are definitely within my budget. I’d probably go for the Expert, if I were buying.

I would certainly be interested in the Carene version of this Waterman pen. Was actually searching online for where else to purchase it.

The Carene is my personal favorite as well. 🙂 Thanks for letting us know your opinion!!

Will I stretch my pen budget and get the Carene or get the Expert. So hard to decide. I have a Carene and it is a great writer, never had any problems with it. Waterman pens are great pen for the price

Eh, I probably wouldn’t buy this. They look nice, but Waterman pens seem too lackluster to me. I own one and it doesn’t inspire me to buy more. Pretty pens, just not compelling to my tastes.

    • Mitchell Weinberg

I tend to agree with Jordan. I don’t have a Waterman, but there are other pens in the mid to upper price point I am much more interested in.

      • Madigan

Fair enough! We’ll be sure to take that into consideration. Thanks for the feedback! 🙂

The Hemisphere was my first “real” (non-Varsity) fountain pen, so I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for it. (I say “was” because I managed to snap the “straw” off the back of the feed while cleaning it not too long ago, so I may be in the market for a replacement….)

    • Madigan

Sorry about your Hemisphere! What a bummer. 🙁 Glad to hear you are a Waterman fan though!

    • maryann

I had a Waterman break at the exact same point, the pen is shot now because I haven’t been able to find a replacement for that part.

Sort of interesting, I feel the design may grow on you over time.
The Ombres et Lumières Perspective’s description indicates the only ‘perspectivey’ bit will be the lines on the nib.

Love Waterman! I have two and they are my go-to pens! Especially love the Brown Expert!
(The other go-to is my Delta Journal…)
You need more choices for the Waterman!

I have a fine point Charleston (black) and a fine point Carene (amber shimmer). Both are “go to” pens for me. I’d love to add a fine point Ombres Perspective to the collection.

Must admit the design of this new one doesn’t excite me. I’ve had Waterman’s I’ve loved. The Phileas, given their low price, with italic nibs were great! And looked pretty darn good, too. Sadly, friends borrowing them have totally ruined my nibs, sigh…. Some other Waterman’s I haven’t warmed to– I discovered, for example, I don’t like narrow-barrelled pens after buying one. That’s on me, not Waterman. For the most part I’ve had good luck with their nibs, which for me is the most important feature of a pen.

I love Waterman pens – do they still make italic or stub nibs? My 21st birthday present from all of my university friends was a Waterman with a stub. It’s fantastic and still one of my favourite pens.

My very first fountain pen was a Waterman Expert, and I still love it. I’ve even bought a few more in that line, and they’re all great. Not sure this design strikes my fancy, but I could probably talk myself into it.

You guys should definitely carry waterman pens. I actually just emailed brian about a week or so ago about them and talked to him about the Carene. I think the finish in White and gunmetal is absolutely stunning.

Absolutely gorgeous pens! I don’t know enough about Waterman pens to sway one way or the other. Though for the price point I’d prefer starting into gold nib pens.
