Monday Matchup #44: Conklin Duragraph Amber in Stub with Private Reserve Shoreline Gold

The King of the Jungle. The Mane Man. Big Cat. Call them what you like, but no matter the name, lions dominate the food chain and the literature landscape, from antelope to zebras and Narnia to Oz.

This week the Cowardly Lion sits atop the Monday Matchup throne, with some help from Madigan on our Media Team, a Conklin Duragraph Amber in Stub and Private Reserve Shoreline Gold. The Duragraph is as timeless as the tale of Dorothy, Toto, the Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow. And if you don't have a Triple Cross medal or Wizard available to provide a needed dose of courage, the big and bold Duragraph will most certainly get the job done.  Meanwhile, the Shoreline Gold ink provides just the right amount of ferocity.

If you find yourself getting lost in a Monday Matchup daydream as you gaze upon the lion's lush mane and wise words, just tap your nib to paper three times and repeat after us, "There's no place like Goulet..."

The Conklin Duragraph Amber in Stub  is available on GouletPens.com for $44. Private Reserve Shoreline Gold is available in a 66ml bottle for $11 and as a 2ml ink sample for $1.25.

  1. Is the special grease they use for lubricating the aluminum parts in the 580AL (per http://www.twsbi.com/blogs/news/16729743-twsbi-diamond-580al-update) available anywhere aftermarket?

  4. Lovely drawing, Madigan. And what a great shading ink! I have that Conklin too and love the pen. I have a medium nib and it's really smooth. I nearly got the stub, though. Guess I'll have to save that for the Cracked Ice version I plan to pick up! :)

  5. Thats defiantly not a cowardly lion. Very nice job Madigan. The ink reminds me of the Diamine Autumn Oak which also shades very nicely.

  6. Dang! This is yet another gorgeous Monday Match-up! I stay amazed at the talent at Team Goulet. Recent match-ups are beginning to change my mind about orange ink. Also, I've never had a Conklin, but that is about to change! I love stub nibs, and this looks great. The ink shading is phenomenal. If I'm going to choose one orange/gold ink, do you recommend Noodler's Apache Sunset, Diamine Autumn Oak or this Private Reserve Shoreline Gold? I'm partial to Diamine and Private Reserve inks, but am open to other brands.

  7. Hi Greg! It's definitely in that family, but has some more red undertones in my opinion. Maybe grab a sample and compare? I hadn't used this ink before so the shading was a wonderful discovery for me as well. :)

  8. Hey Kathy! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was super fun to make! I really liked the Conklin, especially with the stub nib. I think all three of those inks are fantastic- I personally like a little more red in my orange so I prefer Shoreline Gold. Ink is really subjective though, so I'd get samples of each and find the one you like best! :)

  9. Yes I think it does have more red not that you mention it. The next time I make another ink purchase I'll defiantly add a sample.
