When did you last doubt yourself?
It seems that the older we get the easier it is to dismiss our ideas or find fault with them. Despite knowing that even the greatest inventors and thinkers failed miserably (think Thomas Edison's many failed inventions and Benjamin Franklin's failed turkey experiments) before making triumphant discoveries, we are ashamed when we try something that fails. Whether literal or mythical failure, the fear of failure and self-doubt can destroy creativity.
J.M. Barrie authored "Peter Pan", a classic novel that celebrates childhood. Peter patrolled Neverland with his fairy sidekick, Tinker Bell, fighting pirates and never once doubting his ability to fly or to win. Inspired by the novel, Madigan uses a Cross Botanica Fountain- Golden Magnolia and De Atramentis Jasmine to draw Tink and Jasmine blossoms. Within the story, Tink nearly perished from disbelief, and it was only through enthusiastic clapping that she was brought back. Perhaps a little more enthusiasm and a little less self-doubt could encourage you to try something new with your writing.
This week, let your creativity fly! Let the self doubt dissipate and see what happens when you are not afraid to fail.
The Cross Botanica - Golden Magnolia is available at Gouletpens.com for $125. De Atramentis Jasmine is currently available in 80ml bottles or 2ml ink samples.
