  4. In school we had a rule to use fountain pens since age 8.

We used to use a Hero and a brand that I don't see any more call Youth. Both pens were very scratchy.

    Fast forward to today.

I know no other way too to write with. It's been fountain pens only and I have to say that they are my first Love! The more the variety the better.

I simply don't understand why I did not discover gouletpens.com earlier. A mystery.

  12. The reason why I love writting with fountain pens is that you never get tired and you can choose and change ink color as many times as you want :)

  13. I love writing with a fountain pen because using one is relatively rare and I have so many options that rollerballs don't offer. I can match pens, nibs and ink to match my mood or for certain tasks, such as writing a thank you note or taking notes at a meeting. I love using a pen that has been around and used for eighty years or a custom pen made just for me. I also love playing with vintage flex or the silky smooth feel a fountain pen provides when I put pen to paper.

  20. Writing with a fountain pen is truly an emotionally visceral experience as thoughts run from head through fingertips, in the way ink flows onto the page. A fountain pen races along with my ideas as no ballpoint or rollerball can. I will die with a fountain pen in my hand!

  29. Hi Brian,
Ever since I injured my dominant hand (lefty by birth) I had to relearn to write with my right. Fountain pens helped me to write better by forcing me to take the time to write slowly. They have helped teach me patience which I certainly did need to overcome the injury. Other pens just don't seem to encourage improvement in the same way. Thanks for the opportunity to win another fantastic pen!

  52. Writing with a fountain pen puts me in the mindset of a bygone time, when many common tasks required ritual to achieve. I make my own soap, my brother brews alcohol, and we both enjoy the idiosyncratic nature of having to fill a pen. Of course writing feels much more like painting.

I love writing with fountain pens because they always allow me to express and create with my own personality behind each character. From extra fine to broad nibs, cartridge refills and bottled ink, each customized choice showcases a layer of who we are and what we are expressing in that exact moment. The lines they produce make both a timeline of written record as well as a visual thumbprint of our unique identity.

Not only do style and ink choice allow you to express yourself but the physical act of writing with them encourages you to write carefully and deliberately, which for me anyway, encourages thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I love writing with a fountain pen for several reasons. First is the variation possible even in a single pen by changing ink colours or the paper you're writing on. Secondly is the smoothness. Ball point pens aren't smooth like fountain pens are. Last is that I like a heavier pen in hand and with a fountain pen you can get whatever you want, light to heavy.

  82. Beyond the smooth writing characteristics of a good fountain pen, they harken back to times when correspondence was the only means to stay in touch with loved ones or present yourself to professional peers. Handwriting, presentation, and composition were all important; and a fine writing implement certainly helped. The words and ideas were more considered and elegant in form as well as meaning. Using a fountain pen now is a tactile way to reach back to those times.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I love writing with fountain pens because the artistry of the instrument and the inks heighten the artistry of the writing itself. There is so much range of use with a fountain pen, so much that you can do!

Instead of typing a message on my mobile, I sometimes like to write it with a fountain pen in some fancy colour, add a little drawing and send a picture of that to the recipient. Or I'll write a note for a friend and hide it somewhere so that they'll find it later. I really enjoy that and the act of writing is just so much more fun with a fountain pen!

  99. I love the elegance of writing with the fountain pen. The way one can control the wet ink flowing through the nib and the smoothness while writing and watching the ink getting soked in the paper. It gives you complete freedom over the inks as we have a lot of different colours available plus I also try to customise by combining two or more inks to provide myself with a new colour while drawing. Its an absolute delight to draw and write with a fountain pen.

  100. The benefits of fountain pens are endless. For me, being able to write without applying pressure allows me to take quick notes and write long sessions without becoming fatigued. That paired with limitless color options provides an experience that makes me look forward to classes and writing rather than loathing the experience of say a ballpoint. I have owned 3 fountain pens up to this point, all within Brian Goulet's noobie list. This e-motion would be my next step up. Cheers!

  101. Fifteen years ago, my mom gave me a dark grey pen with a funny looking nib one random day. Says it's something she found in her office. I didn't quite know how to use that pen back then, so I left it in my drawer.

About 5 years ago, I was rummaging through the drawer and came across the same pen. An idea popped into my head about using the pen to write with lemon juice for a magic trick of some sort. Didn't quite work out well. But what I did discover was what a joy it was writing with a fountain pen. Laying down beautiful effortless lines, therapeutic pen care sessions, and writing smoother than a baby's bottom.

That's why I love writing with a fountain pen. All the nice things one can say about writing fancy plus a little reminder of how my mom provided for me growing up.

That pen turned out to be a Lamy Safari Matt Black. And no, it wasn't ruined by the lemon juice.

I think it's because the ink is... gliding over the paper? Not sure but I don't press the fountain pen to the paper as hard as I do with a ballpoint pen or even pencil.

Also ink looks so amazing on paper, even a shopping list becomes more beautiful. :)

  135. Writing with a fountain pen makes it an experience; it gives the written word more soul and character due to the variation possible with nib sizes and pressure variations. Not to mention, a good fountain pen gives a smooth and oh-so-effortless feel when writing which makes even the most inane scribble a wonderful experience!

  136. I just started writing with a fountain pen recently and it has such and amazing smoothness - the nib just flows over the pages! I had such trouble going back to ballpoint pens at work after that, I think I'll just use fountain pens at work too!

I originally wanted fountain pens for calligraphy, but then I discovered how great and easy they are to write with; which made it great for school. Now, I'm working towards a Vanishing Point for the ultimate EDC for quick notes! -Jodi M

  145. I love writing with a fountain pen because of so many reasons: the skating across the page, that characteristic scratch that let's know when you're out of ink, the weight of the pen dropping through the crotch of your thumb, the smell of new ink. I remember the first time I wrote my first fountain pen short story. It felt, and still feels, so much more thought out. Writing with a fountain pen gives you an only-then intimacy not only with the page, but with the words you put down; every word with my fountain pen isn't the monotonous line of technology's mark on writing. It becomes art.
