Dive into Summer: Top 5 Fountain Pens & Ink

There are some things that are so quintessentially summer that you spend the rest of the year longing for those brief moments. The season of fireflies and fireworks, swimming pools and sea breezes, and longer stretches of sunlight has returned. We gathered our own unique selection of pens and ink that celebrate the best of summer so you can have these joyful reminders all year round.

“Aren’t the clouds beautiful? They look like big balls of cotton…” -Charles Schulz, Peanuts

With its swirling streaks of white on a blue background, it’s almost too easy to imagine the Monteverde Denali fountain pen ($68) as a perfect summer sky. The addition of J. Herbin Gris Nuage ($11) channels the pop up summer storm that has broken up many summer baseball games. This pen and ink together make a wonderful combination for writing those dreamy diary entries and capturing every summer memory to look back on for years to come.

“For myself, I declare I do not know anything about it. But the sight of the stars always makes me dream” -Vincent Van Gogh

Add a little sparkle to your writing with a pen named for the glittering celestial bodies, the Pilot Vanishing Point Raden Galaxy ($304). With flecks of abalone shells lacquered onto the pen body, the Vanishing Point shines like no other. Pair it with J. Herbin Stormy Grey ($26) for even more dazzle in your writing. It is a mid-dark grey ink with a pop of golden sheen that will give your writing the appearance of the brilliant stars against the dark night sky.

“Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy”- John Denver, “Sunshine on my Shoulders”

Can’t have summer without sunshine! The Conklin All-American Sunburst Orange ($76) is a fun flare of vibrant orange that will instantly brighten up any writing session. Add Noodler’s Apache Sunset ($12.50) to the mix and you’ve got the perfect recipe for seemingly endless streams of writing. This versatile ink casts off a broad range of shades for a uniquely golden writing experience every time.

“The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination, and brings eternal joy to the soul.” -Robert Wyland

Relax and feel the waves of soothing, smooth writing wash over you with this serene Ocean Blue Lamy Al-Star ($37.60) and J. Herbin 1670 Bleu Ocean (Currently on sale for $22). The solid blue aluminum body of this pen mirrors the placid uniformity of the endless blue seas we all relish swimming in each summer. Bleu Ocean ink completes the aquatic inspired spell with its wet, smooth flow and glinting sheen that mimics the sun reflecting off the waves at your favorite beach.

“A little sand between your toes takes away all your woes” -Anonymous

Take inspiration from your surroundings this summer and grab a pen and ink with the same glorious golden luster as your favorite sandy locales. With the gold Pilot Metropolitan ($15) and Diamine Golden Sands ink ($20), you can bring the beach with you wherever you go. These glowing golden pieces are sure to melt away your woes and help you write your way to bliss.

  • Ohh, I love the Diamine Golden Sands ink… I don’t know what use I’d have for it, but I’m sure I could find one!

This is such a great collection. I like the Pilot Raden Galaxy but with the 1670 Bleu Ocean ink as my first choice. I also like the gold Metropolitan with Diamine Golden Sands. All are great choices. I think my summer writing pairing is my Edison Sapphire Flake Beaumont with Liberty’s Elysium. It is my newest EDC for this summer.

Thanks, Tom! I loved the idea of a pen and ink for each theme. Your summer pairing sounds quite lovely. Good choice!

Haha you have great taste, Siobhan. That’s my favorite too.
