Hey there, fountain pen friends, Whitney here. This week, I'm bringing you my pairing of the Conklin Duragraph Orange Nights 1.1 Stub and Robert Oster Orange Zest. Read on to about the inspiration behind this piece and what I thought of the pen and ink.

July 17th marks the birthday of Berenice Abbott. She was a strong, independent female photographer who lived during the late 1800's and most of the 20th century. I found this quote very inspirational at face value, but it is also even more powerful when considered and put into the context of photography, especially smartphone camera use. We spend quite a bit of time behind screens that we forget the importance of experiencing moments versus being worried about documenting them. I believe there are even studies that show our memories don't store the information as well from a photograph as they do when one is actively engaging in their surroundings.

I began this piece by working on the portrait. I focused all of my energies into it and had to make a couple renditions of it before I was satisfied. I grabbed a water brush pen and dipped it in the ink to begin laying down layers of ink. I used the different shades and hues to build the face. Once I was satisfied with that, I grabbed the Duragraph and wrote in the quote with it. I felt that an ink wash around the entire piece would be a nice finishing touch.

While the portrait was done with a brush pen. I did enjoy using the Stub nib for writing in the quote. I don't normally get the chance to use stubs and I usually prefer Extra Fine and Fine nibs. It was nice to get a feel for what writing with a stub nib is like. This nib size would be good for some slightly more formal occasions or decorative writing. I guess some people could use it for writing casually, but I can't imagine really doing something like that with this nib. I could see it being good for addressing envelopes or maybe writing a more official and beautiful letter out to someone.
