Hi fountain pen friends! After taking a week off from Monday Matchup, we’re back with our latest pen and ink pairing. We’ve had quite a few thunderstorms here in Richmond so far this summer. While I’d prefer a sunny day over a rainy one, I tried to capture all of the rain and storms in this week’s Monday Matchup. I inked up a Jinhao X750 Shimmering Sands with Diamine Blue Pearl and got started.
I decided to include the famous nursery rhyme lyrics “Rain rain go away, come again another day” since it often seems like the rain ruins my summer plans. I wrote the quote out using the Jinhao and then traced the outline of the umbrella on the right with a pencil. It was actually harder to outline the umbrella that I thought, so it took some time, and there was a lot of erasing! One of the benefits of rain gear (umbrellas, jackets and boots) is that they’re often bright colored with fun designs, so I drew the polka dots to add some flair. The page felt a bit empty, so I drew the second umbrella and took a q-tip to swab the ink. You can definitely see the sparkles where I swabbed. The lettering and design were a simple way to try out this pen and ink pairing.
Overall, I really loved this ink. The dark blue ink with the subtle sparkles makes this ink practical, but still fun. I used a Leuchtturm Sketchbook, so the paper didn’t show off the sparkles to their fullest potential. If you really want to see it shine, try something like Tomoe River paper.
The Jinhao X750 is a great beginner pen, especially with a price point under $10. It’s only available with a medium nib, but I found the nib to be both comfortable and easy to write with. I’ve given this pen to many friends who wanted to try a fountain pen for the first time. If you want to change up the writing experience, you could always swap out the medium nib for a #6 Goulet nib in a different writing style.
I particularly liked the pairing of the sparkles both in the pen and ink. This pen would be great to add to your collection at home or at work, and if you’re into sparkles, I would definitely recommend giving this ink a try. Don’t forget to maintain a regular cleaning schedule if you decide to use an ink with shimmer or sparkle!
Have you tried an ink with sparkles? What did you think of it?
