Presents from the Heart: 5 Simple DIY Gift Ideas

5 Simple DIY Gift Ideas with fountain pens and notebooks.

Hey there, friends! Lydia here. If you’re anything like me, holidays and special occasions always present an exciting challenge in creativity. I come from a large family and buying Christmas presents for everyone is quite a challenge. I quickly found that making my own gifts was a much easier way to give everyone a personalized gift that they loved and that I enjoyed making. Here are some fun ideas I am planning to use this year for loved ones that will hopefully inspire you.

Framed Handwritten Poem

5 Simple DIY Gift Ideas with fountain pens and notebooks.

Supplies needed:

Start by filling the water brush pen with water and dipping it in the complementary background ink color. You will then use this to create the ink wash background for the poem. Be sure not to saturate the page so your writing will show up against it. It is best to have a very light background and a dark ink for writing out the words. Leave the ink wash to dry for a few hours at least. When it’s completely dry, plan out your poem lightly with a pencil to make sure the words are lined up where you want them. Then you can go over the words with the pen and ink and complete your heartfelt gift. This is a simple way to create a very personalized, cherished gift for a loved one. You could use just about any writing, such as a favorite poem, passage from a book, or song lyrics.

Memory Book

Supplies Needed:

With just a few moments from each day, you can create a wonderful and lasting log of memories with your loved one. At the end of every day, simply jot down a few lines about the day to remember the highlights. These notebooks are a fantastic way for parents to document 5 years of their childrens’ lives, ideal for newlyweds who want to remember the early years of their marriage, or just for anyone that wants to slow time a bit and remember more from each day that passes. I have been using my Some Lines since my birthday in June and it’s amazing even in that short time what I’ve forgotten and which I can remember from looking back on those pages.

Stationery set and a personalized Wax Seal

The Leuchtturm1917 Medium A5 journals feature 249 numbered pages for you to fill with photos and short written memories that your loved one will treaure. The index at the front of the notebook even makes a great place to catalog the dates or special highlights you want to mention in the book. Start by pasting in some of your favorite pictures and then you can fill in the blank spaces with poems, quotes, and song lyrics that are meaningful to you. After you gift it to them, you can even continue to add onto it together.

Lydia, these are all great ideas! I bet the Some Lines a Day notebooks will be a big holiday hit this year, a great idea. I used my italic nibs to create a personalized birthday card for my wife. Time to do something similar for Christmas.

I especially love the framed handwritten poem idea, it could be used to celebrate any special occasion like the birth of a child, wedding, etc. Just match the poem to the person. You don’t have to be a poet, poems covering anything under the sun are easily found online. But if you are capable of coming up with your own poem, all the better!

Original Crown Mill bi-color sets are so high class, super quality, a gift most anyone would love. The encouragement book too – so special. I particularly love the animal train cards – perfect for young and old alike. Makes me smile every time I look at mine. I’ve got some thinking to do and you’ve given me great ideas. Thanks Lydia.

Thanks, Tom! I’m really excited about the photo album idea. That’s the main present I am giving the boyfriend this year. The Some Lines a Day will be a hit for sure. I am loving mine. Almost 5 months in! Haven’t missed a day.

The poem idea has been heavily utilized for many gifts for my family in years past. But I now have the excitement of using my fountain pens and inks to handcraft them instead of typing them on the computer! My grandfather has a small collection of poems and photos I’ve gifted him over the years. The internet is a wealth of poetic beauty and inspiration.

Great idea about the animal cards! They would make a fabulous gift for a child. Glad to help with ideas!

I love the Goulet cards, and the idea of writing a quick inspirational quote is perfect! Thanks for the idea!

I’ve wanted to do the poem/quote thing for a while, but my plans are too elaborate and I’m not sure how to create what I visualize. I should just go simpler.

    • Cory Kirk

Don’t give up! Start one step at a time and think about all the elements that go into what you visualize.

        Thanks, Cory. I appreciate it.

Great ideas and I want to share one that I have in the hopper. Our 40th wedding anniversary is in 2018. Evergreen by Barbara Streisand was the song we had for our first dance at our wedding. I am going have the lyrics printed out by a caligrapher and give that to her on our anniversary next year.

      What a sweet idea!

I ordered a few wax and seal kits and pens as gifts for the holidays this year. Just came today! Now I am thinking I should have ordered a seal and wax for myself so I could criss-cross the ribbon and place my own seal on each gift wrapped package.

    • Lydia At Goulet Pens

Awww that would be a sweet touch!

  • I like the idea of hand writing a poem as a gift.
