Hi all, Adam again. This week, I chose the Goulet Exclusive, Edison Nouveau Premiere 2018 Spring Edition ‘Purple Reign’ (no longer available). I paired that with Rohrer and Klingner ‘Cassia’. Want to learn more about my experiences with this pen and ink? Read on!

I chose the Edison Nouveau Premiere for a few reasons. First, I’ve never actually written with an Edison pen before, so I wanted to see for myself why this is one of our most popular pens. Purple isn’t necessarily my color, but I love drawing portraits and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to draw Prince, one of my all-time favorite musicians and music personalities. Cassia is my favorite purple, hands-down. It is in my favorites ink sample set, so if you want to give it a shot, you can get my sample package set. I think Rohrer and Klingner is a vastly underrated brand, so I also wanted to take this opportunity to showcase this awesome brand of inks.

Prince was definitely my inspiration for this piece. I think he is an inspiration as a musician, a personality, and as someone who was truly authentic to themselves. He was an individual with a flair for the dramatic, so I was really hopeful that I would be able to find a picture of him that really showcased his personality. The picture that I chose was from when Prince performed at Super Bowl XLI. In that picture, Prince just looks like someone who is completely in his element. In front of thousands of fans, he looks like the picture of confidence, grace, and passion. He is doing what he loves, and even if you’re not a musician, that’s an inspiration.

There isn’t a whole lot to my process as far as steps go. I look at the original and free-hand it. I did intentionally try to put a lot less detail in this drawing than I usually do. I wanted to have a nice contrast of the the purple and white. The beauty of the ink really speaks for itself. I then looked up quotes from Prince, and I can tell you this guy said some interesting stuff. He was also not a fan of the music establishment, record labels and all that. I ultimately decided to go with some of his song lyrics. That’s what most people are going to remember. I’m sure it’s been done a million times before, but I decided to justify the text diagonally to make it look like… purple rain.

I was honestly blown away by the Edison Pen. I am not a fan of fine nibs for general use. I have an EF Pilot Vanishing Point that I will use, which is strictly for utility. It’s the pen I can carry around and be pretty confident I can use in any circumstance. Otherwise, I just generally find Fine tip pens to be scratchy and unpleasant. This nib was like ‘buttah’. The experience of using it was fantastic, and now I understand why these are among our most popular pens. If I had to say what pen was my ‘grail pen’, Edison has now moved to the top of my list. I normally like a heavier pen, but the material of the pen was super smooth and very pleasant from a tactile point of view. I was also amazed that it only took me one filled converter to do the whole drawing. With as wet of a writer as the pen was, I thought I would be going through lots of ink. That was unexpected. I think I missed an opportunity to pair the Monteverde Purple Reign ink with this pen, but I just love Cassia way too much. There is no other Purple ink for me. Try it out, and I bet you’ll never look back.

If I were to do this piece again, I’d be interested to see how an EF works with the Edison. If it’s as nice of an experience as the Fine was, I would say it would replace my Vanishing Point as an everyday carry pen. On top of that, they’re just plain gorgeous to look at. Hopefully without giving too much away, the 2018 Summer Premiere is definitely one of the most gorgeous pens I have seen in my 5 years here. Be on the lookout for that.
