Working In The Dark

Hurricane Irene hit our area as a tropical storm on Saturday, and it hit pretty hard. We were fortunate enough to escape any major damage, but we've been without power since then. When the storm hit this past weekend, more than 3/4 of our Richmond Metro area was without power, and it's still only about half of the city that has power because there were so many downed trees that fell on power lines. We're projected to get our power working again tomorrow night, and we're quite excited about that.

We've had an adventure working this week. We set up our camp over at may parents' house about 15 minutes away (they have power), and that's where we're doing all of our printing of invoices and shipping labels. We've been packing orders up at our shop like normal, but since we have no power there we've had to light up the shop with flashlights and headlamps as we work. Once we're done packing, we have to cart them over to my parents' to print the shipping labels, then swing by the post office to drop them off. It's become quite the operation! Because we've been so quick to adapt and find a new groove, we've been able to continue full operation of the business without hardly skipping a beat. We even have Ink Drop going out as scheduled tomorrow.

The only problem is, we still have no power so we won't be able to broadcast Write Time tonight, and I haven't been able to blog anything other than quick updates like these, or answer emails throughout the day. Keeping the daily operation up and going with all of the roadblocks we've had has required our full attention and we've been putting in a lot of extra work. Once we get power back and are able to settle down a little bit, we should get back into a normal routine of blogging and doing videos again.

Please bear with us as we get through these last couple of days of recovery from the storm, especially with my emails because I don't have internet during the day when I'm at the shop until the power comes back on.

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and support. We've had awesome support on threads like this one on FPN making sure we're okay. I assure you, we're doing fine, but we are eager to have things back to 'normal', whatever that is for us! We should be back for Write Time next week, and I'll be able to blog about the new Noodler's Ahab Flex Pens coming, the TWSBI 540, PR DC Super Violet, JB's Pen Flush, our new Podcast, and more exciting stuff we've been doing.

**Update 9/3/11- We finally have power again! We went over 5 days without power, and we're happy to say we're no worse for the wear. We still kept up will all orders coming in, and I'm really looking forward to a relaxing weekend. I appreciate all your patience on the blog, as Ink Nouveau has suffered the most from this storm! I will take this weekend to rejuvenate myself, and I'll be back next week with fervor :)

  1. You guys are awesome, and that's a great picture :D (And darn it, can't glean any hints about what's in Ink Drop from that picture at all...)

  6. All of you are just amazing.  My TWSBI came today, just a couple of days after I ordered it.  Not only that, it was wrapped Goulet style AKA, "How the $%#@*% do I get my pen out of this bubble wrap?!"  In other words, even Irene couldn't prevent the Goulet Pen Company people from doing what they do best.  So a big thank you to you all for a job better than well done and I'm thankful that you got through everything okay.

By the way, this is my first TWSBI and it writes like a dream filled with Diamine Grey ink.  It's stylish, the ink flow is perfect, and it's just fun to use.  Again, thanks for a great product that is combined with perfect service.

  7. This was actually my first self-timer picture with my D3100! It worked out well, except for the lens flare from Sam's giant headlamp! (he's second from the right)

Yeah, no hints on Ink Drop :) C'mon, the surprise is so much of the fun!

  8. It's been a bit stressful for me, but the guys have been having a blast. As a result, I've been enjoying it too, though I won't mind when the power comes back on and things get back to normal!

  9. I know....I would totally have still done it, but with both internet and power out....our options were limited :P

  10. Thanks! It was a pretty straightforward decision for me....customers needed their orders shipped, Ink Drop needed to go out, and my guys needed to work. All I had to do was figure out how to make all that still happen with no power. It's been trying, but after 3 days now we have a rhythm down.

  11. I'm glad you got it so soon! We got TWSBI in Friday afternoon after our mail came, and everyone was so excited for them. We got PR DC Super Violet and the next batch of JB's pen flush that same afternoon. The next morning (Saturday) at 10am, bam, power's out. I still went out Saturday morning and packed up what I could, but then the hurricane was coming and things really started to get dicey. We decided to take refuge over at my parents' house about 15 minutes away, because they still had power (though it was cutting in and out all day). Once the storm passed on Sunday, we were able to see the news and how almost the whole city had no power....I knew we had better plan on a flashlight week :P

This week has been interesting, with a lot of challenges but we've come through it okay on the other side. We're essentially all caught up on shipping out orders back to our normal 24-hour window, and Ink Drop is all ready to go out. I'm a little sad we still didn't have power because I wanted to talk about all the new stuff like TWSBI, but it's probably for the best. I'm SOOO tired tonight, and I have been spending every spare minute just trying to keep the daily operations running like normal so I haven't had the time to blog/take pictures/do videos like I normally would. By next week's Write Time, we'll be back to normal.

  12. Wow, that photo made me laugh! you guys are insane lol. I got my TWSBI Wednesday right as the mail-woman pulled up I'm so excited about how well this pen is made. In other words, I could have waited until things were back up to normal. I'm impressed with Brian Rachel and the rest of the team to keep trucking along...You guys are the best!

  13. It is heartening to see you all in good spirits, a little more wind and water than usual and a few less electrons can't stop you ;)
I have to admit, I live in an area, where natural disasters are something that happens to other people, I wouldn't have the slightest idea, how to cope with almost a week without power... I truly admire the way you keep trucking on, and that goes for all the affected people...

  14. You guys are Crazy! That's why I love you. Time to cue "Hall of the Mountain King" on the boombox :)
PS, I got my ink order yesterday but still haven't gotten an order from another vendor that was placed earlier and not to an earthquake or hurricane zone.

  15. Glad to hear you're all okay! Here's hoping the power comes back on soon. I think everyone totally understands if things are a bit delayed.

  16. I'm glad you got a good laugh, we have been laughing at ourselves quite a lot this week! It's one of those situations that's just so crazy and unusual that you just laugh and take it in stride :)

  17. We normally don't have many natural disasters either! Central Virginia is normally a very temperate climate, but between the earthquake earlier last week, then the hurricane on the weekend, I don't know what to expect anymore :P

  18. Haha...that's cool to hear :) Despite all the setbacks, we actually haven't fallen behind much at all. We had a harder time with things like special orders and order changes since we didn't have email access all day, but we were able to work around it all. What can I say, we did it with a bing bang bong! :)

  19. We actually just got power back on this afternoon, and I was both relieved and a tiny bit disappointed because we were kind of having fun with the craziness of packing in the dark. I'm about 98% relieved though, my life will be much easier now ;)

  20. Nice pic of the Goulet Pen Company Crew, who are conducting business as usual (with a smile) even during a power outage. Earthquakes and Hurricanes can't stop GPC! Write on and on and on and on and on... :)

  21. Nice headgear! LOL.
Seriously - glad you are all ok. And it's amazing that you managed to stay on schedule through it all. Amazing, but not surprising that you'd find a way to work around setbacks and keep going full speed ahead ; )

Can't wait for thes month's Ink Drop! And for the next Write Time so we can hear more about what's been going on.

  22. We were actually in really good spirits all week. One thing is for sure, things are never dull around GPC!

  23. We did manage to keep on schedule, except for the blog here. I would say that we were 'treading water' this week, keeping our heads up and keeping in place, which is a victory in my book. "Normal" for me is to be always moving forward, which means getting the daily tasks done, but always working to learn the products better, take pictures, shoot video, post on forums, etc. Those are the things I've really missed doing this week, but that's okay. Everyone here has been so great and understanding that it only motivates me that much more to want to get back to blogging regularly :) And yes, we'll have a LOT to talk about in next week's Write Time...of course, barring some other unforeseen natural disaster...

  24. Okay, once again the Goulets prove that they are superhuman aliens from the planet Ink Nouveau.  I just received my September Ink Drop in the mail about an hour ago.  Not only is the theme clever and the colors neat but the wee surprise was great.  And you managed to do all of this in the dark and get everything shipped on time.  Yup...definitely superhuman aliens from the planet Ink Nouveau! (Superman should have it so good!) ;-)

  25. We try, we try ;) I'm glad it arrived to you well, and I'm thrilled that you like this month's colors. We're no aliens here, though we certainly felt like it with the headlamps on this week!

  26. I am so glad that all of you are safe, and I am even happier to have found such a classy and great group of people. Thank you for the fantastic service that you provide to everyone, I will continue to support you, and get my ink, paper and fountain pen addiction supported by you guys. :-)

  27. Thank you so much, Richard! We really do appreciate your support, and we'll continue working hard for you :)
