Sailor Yurameku Kangyou: Ink Review

Sailor Yurameku Kangyou is part of Sailor's Yurameku fountain pen ink collection, which features soft, muted colors with shading capabilities inspired by the sky. This light gray ink deepens to a dusky purple, quite like clouds on a morning sunrise. Read on for our impressions!

Ink Review 

Supplies Used:

• LAMY AL-star with medium steel nib
• Rhodia No. 16 dot pad, 80g white paper
• Tomoé River 52 gsm white paper
• Leuchtturm1917 80g notebook

Smear Test (Dry Time):

• ~10 seconds – This is a relatively dry ink and it dried after 10 seconds.

Drip Test (Water Resistance):

• Low – Due to this ink's lighter hue, it disappeared once water touched the paper. We don't recommend this ink for important paperwork or artwork.

Saturation:

• High – You can see the difference between swabs 1 and 3, where the purple and blue shows as the ink is layered.

Ease of Cleaning:

• High – Kangyou is a well-behaved ink, and we had no issues flushing it out of the pens we tested it in.

Shading:

• Medium – With medium and larger nibs, expect to see a good amount of shading. The shading might be a bit harder to see on smaller nib sizes, but it will show up some, no matter what nib size you use.

Flow:

• Dry – Like most other Yurameku inks, we found this one to be particularly dry, and while it leads to a quicker dry time, it does have a bit more feedback from your pen on the paper.

 Packaging and Aesthetics:

• The Sailor Yurameku bottle is square with a label that wraps around one side, so you can see the ink color or name from different angles. The opening is large enough to fill directly from the bottle.

Summary:

Sailor Yurameku Kangyou is a gorgeous fountain pen ink that changes hues depending on the paper used. Between gray and purple/blue, it features a high saturation and a decent amount of shading. We found this ink to be easy to use and clean, and while not the right pick for important documents due to the lack of water resistance, this color is definitely a winner and worth a look!
