Greetings, fountain pen friends, from the Customer Care department! My name is Susan, and I’m delighted to bring you my first ever Monday Matchup. I used the 2017 Special Edition Lamy Safari Petrol with De Atramentis Edgar Allan Poe ink. Want to know what I thought of this pair and what inspired this piece? Keep reading on to check it out!
I was inspired to create this piece because our big office move just happened! The excitement has been palpable around here the last few weeks and we were in the thick of it, during the week leading up to the move when I completed this matchup. We all moved together, as a group, as individuals, and as teams, to a new location that we all had input in designing and planning throughout the entire process. This is definitely a huge and exciting time for The Goulet Pen Company on all levels. But for any of you who have known us for a while now, have surely realized by now that this is not your average company and, naturally, this was not your average company move. We are so much like a family in this office. This was like a family move and we were all “movin’ on up” together. I had a few people in mind that I have always enjoyed, read, respected, or found particularly interesting. But, I settled a quote I found from Albert Einstein that seemed especially fitting for this time in all of our lives. Plus, what more interesting of a character could you ask for? Albert (Albert, on a first name basis, like we’re old friends) had that unfathomable genius mixed with a fabulous sense of humor and he was also a bit of a trickster. You gotta love that.
The Lamy Safari Petrol is such a fabulous color with a great matte finish, plus it’s a Safari, which you can’t beat no matter how many fountain pens you’ve used. The Safari is an all around great pen. I recommend it to customers several times a week. I believe you can have several high-end pens, but you should still have a Safari or two in your collection. It’s a workhorse pen, it offers swappable nibs, it’s smooth as silk, and it is under $30. I am not a fine nib kind of girl so this particular pen was a bit of a change for me. I use stubs and crisp italics exclusively. Ask anyone that knows me though, I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge. I gave it my most valiant of efforts, but the Fine is simply not the writing style for me. De Atramentis Edgar Allan Poe is nearly a perfect match for the color of the Petrol Safari. I love De Atramentis ink as well, so this was the perfect pairing. For my next matchup, I’d love to get back to using my beloved stubs and maybe try something with more color. I am not a monochromatic kind of girl. Maybe an ink sample package? Time will tell. Stay tuned!
Like I said, the Safari is a wonderful pen and works well for our beginners and seasoned pen family alike. With the fine nib and the right ink, this pen can be used for students. Students often times, by nature of being a student, use less fountain pen friendly paper and the Safari in fine has just the right ink flow to prevent bleedthrough and feathering issues in this case. If you are a fan of European Fine nibs, this is the pen for you. With the ability to swap on replacement nibs, you can also go from fine to 1.9mm stub in under a minute. This pen is truly perfect for all occasions.
You can find the 2017 Special Edition Lamy Safari Petrol for $29.60 at GouletPens.com for a limited time. De Atramentis Edgar Allan Poe is available in a 35ml bottle for $12.95 or a 2ml ink sample for $1.30.
