Sailor Ink Studio 123: Ink Review

Sailor Ink Studio 123 is the most popular of the Sailor Ink Studio collection due to its multi-tonal shading nature. It has a purple-leaning grey base, but can sheen teal with the right nib and paper. Read on to find out more! 

 

Ink Review 

Supplies Used:

• LAMY AL-star with medium steel nib
• Rhodia No. 16 dot pad, 80g white paper
• Tomoé River 52 gsm white paper
• Leuchtturm1917 80g notebook

Smear Test (Dry Time):

• 10 Seconds – Compared to some of the other Sailor Ink Studio inks this one took a little longer to dry than expected, but it was still pretty set by 10 or so seconds.

Drip Test (Water Resistance):

• Low – Like the other Sailor Ink Studio colors this ink does not have much resistance and would not be ideal for an adventure journal where it could get wet.

Saturation:

• Low – This color needs a few passes to get a deeper saturation as shown in the Swab Test though the subtle color changes allow it to stand out.

Ease of Cleaning:

• High – Since this ink lacks water resistance it washes away pretty easily and after drawing up water only a couple of times it ran clear.

Shading:

• High – Since this color is multi-tonal you do get a good amount of shading with this ink, from light purple to gray-blue or even that touch of teal.

Flow:

• Medium – This was a surprisingly smooth ink to write with, and while not overly wet it flows well on all paper types we tried.

 Packaging and Aesthetics:

• Sailor Ink Studio colors use 20ml glass square bottles with a white faceted cap that is easy to fill most pens from.

Summary:

Sailor Ink Studio 123 overall is a soft ink with layers of subtle purples, blues and teal that flows exceptionally well. While not water resistant, this would make for a soothing choice for daily writing along with a quick try time.
